The horticulture department of the Karnataka government will take back 2.35 acres of land inside Lalbagh leased out to two private societies.

Story so far: The Nurserymen Cooperative Society is allotted 1.65 acres while Mysore Udyana Kalasangha occupies 70 cents (28 guntas). The decision was taken by the government since they were making hefty profits while only paying a negligible amount towards renewal fees.

  • Both societies are private entities registered under the Societies Act.
  • The prime land at Lalbagh was leased out to them for a period of 25 years.

Taking land back: An order was issued by the state government earlier this month directing both societies to return the land back to the horticulture department. The order also stated that the buildings currently used by the societies should also be handed over to the horticulture department.
