CUMTA is looking to commercialise MRTS stations as part of its merger with the Chennai Metro.

What’s it about? The CUMTA has selected Black Brix as the consultant to prepare a feasibility report to commercialise 18 MRTS stations. Apart from this, the company will also prepare a detailed project report. From 2001-2006, the state government allowed the CMDA to plan for the commercialisation of the air space above MRTS Phase II stations. However, the project never materialised.

  • In the first stage of this project, the operation and maintenance of the station will be done by the Indian Railways. The next stage will be the complete takeover by the Chennai Metro.
  • The project involves the commercialisation of the 500-metre area along the station. The spaces will be used to build recreational and entertainment facilities.

Who said what? CUMTA special officer I Jayakumar said it’s the first instance post-Covid that a study will be done for potential office spaces at the stations. The plan is to commercialise and develop the spaces with minimal hindrance to the public.
