Despite multiple complaints of cattle inside the market, no action has been taken.
What’s happening? Traders have repeatedly complained about cattle straying into the Koyambedu market and eating fruits and vegetables stocked in the shops. During the peak hours, about 200 cattle roam freely inside the market, and the owners don’t do anything to stop them.
- The market was previously a cattle shelter. Cattle owners don’t tie the cows to keep them in place and instead are allowed to roam inside the market.
- The animals eat the fresh produce leading to a lot of waste. During a recent visit by HR&CE Minister PK Sekarbabu, there wasn’t a single cow spotted for 5-6 hours.
Who said what? Trader R Muthukumar said the cows affect business as they block roads and pathways and inconvenience customers. One retailer said they’re tired of filing repeated complaints. Zonal officials of Kodambakkam said the CMDA regulates the market, and officials will look into it.
