The Department of Fisheries will open fish canteens at 100 locations around Bengaluru. At these canteens, a whole fish supper would run you about ₹100. And there’s more. Twenty-four different fish dishes, including soup, fish curry, rice, and pickle appetisers, will be available to customers.

What’s it about? S Angara, the minister of fisheries, announced that the government intended to open a canteen in each Bengaluru ward. They are launching the canteens in 100 locations across the city, to begin with. Stores will be established where meals will be made accessible in addition to putting fish on sale in partnership with Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

  • In addition to Cubbon Park in Bengaluru, the department also manages Mathsya Darshini eateries in Ballari, Shivamogga, and Mangaluru. Currently, a whole fish supper costs ₹130 at the Cubbon Park canteen.

Why Bengaluru? According to the minister, a city like Bengaluru has been picked since it houses a large number of people consuming seafood. Angara stated that a centralised kitchen would be established to distribute food to these canteens in order to maintain the consistency of flavour and cost of these meals at all locations. The cost of the meals is yet to be set by the state government.

  • The department is also trying to create jobs for young people through this project.
  • The plan will also benefit fishermen since there will be more demand for fish if more people start eating it.
