Raghavanapalya residents urge the BMTC to make buses accessible for senior citizens.

Story so far: Residents in JP Nagar 9th Phase’s Raghavanapalya petitioned the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) to redirect buses by one kilometre to make public transport more accessible to senior citizens in the area. The BMTC will take action after a survey.

  • The petition was signed by 138 residents and dropped off at the BMTC head office on March 2.
  • They argued that several residential apartments like Nandi Gardens, IMG Elite, and Aryahamsa housed senior citizens. For them, the existing bus stops are not within walking distance.

Why it matters? Senior citizens depend on public transportation for their travel requirements, either due to a lack of private vehicles or health-related limitations. In the absence of reachable bus stops, the ageing population is compelled to avail of expensive and unreliable autorickshaws and taxis.
