🐄 Cattle menace at Koyambedu market

Despite multiple complaints of cattle inside the market, no action has been taken.
What’s happening? Traders have repeatedly complained about cattle straying into the Koyambedu market and eating fruits and vegetables stocked in the shops. During the peak hours, about 200 cattle roam freely inside the market, and the owners don’t do anything to stop them.
- The market was previously a cattle shelter. Cattle owners don’t tie the cows to keep them in place and instead are allowed to roam inside the market.
- The animals eat the fresh produce leading to a lot of waste. During a recent visit by HR&CE Minister PK Sekarbabu, there wasn’t a single cow spotted for 5-6 hours.
Who said what? Trader R Muthukumar said the cows affect business as they block roads and pathways and inconvenience customers. One retailer said they’re tired of filing repeated complaints. Zonal officials of Kodambakkam said the CMDA regulates the market, and officials will look into it.
🏍️ Study on road accidents

The study shows two-wheeler riders are the most vulnerable to fatalities.
What’s it about? The Chennai Police, using 2022 accident data, has found that two-wheeler riders were involved in 50% of fatal road accidents. The study was conducted under the Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Kapil Kumar C Saratkar’s direction. It categorised accident numbers based on vehicles involved and deaths.
- The study looked at 500 fatal road accidents that led to 508 deaths. For two-wheelers, the number was 235, with 241 deaths. This was followed by trucks and cars.
- In self-fallen deaths, there were 108 for two-wheelers. The second most vulnerable victims on roads were pedestrians, with 179 deaths.
To dos: Saratkar said traffic enforcement and awareness campaigns could be effective only to an extent. He said it’s also up to motorists to drive responsibly. He also warned members of the public against jaywalking and urged pillion riders to wear helmets.
🌊 Waterfalls draw crowds

As waterfalls near the city reopen, they’ve become an attraction for residents.
What’s it about? Waterfalls in Nagalapuram, 70 km from Chennai, have reopened recently, and residents have begun to flock there. They’re open from 8 am till 3 pm. With no public transport access, people use private vehicles. Other notable falls in Andhra Pradesh have been closed since 2018 due to some deaths and a lack of security.
- As some waterfalls have recently reopened with security and forest rangers, trekkers and nature lovers have thronged there. One of the major attractions is Aare falls.
- Nagalapuram has three waterfalls, but only one is open now. There’s still work to be done in terms of basic facilities like toilets and signboards.
Other attractions: Apart from the falls, there are about a dozen small streams. There’s also a temple that several tourists visit.
🌧️ Replicating flood mitigation measures

The successful mitigation model adopted at the Ripon Building will be replicated at bus stands and depots.
What’s it about? The Corporation will adopt the same flood mitigation model used at the Ripon Building at bus stands and depots. The Ripon Building became prone to flooding after the Metro rail construction. On Monday, the officials met to discuss the methodology and hope to complete the work by this year’s northeast monsoon.
- At the Ripon Building, large sumps were built, and motors pumped water to the Buckingham Canal during the rainy season. Once this was done, the place hadn’t seen any flooding.
- More than 50% of bus stands of the MTC in more than 35 locations have been affected by waterlogging. It has become an issue in places like Anna Nagar West, T Nagar, and Broadway.
