🧐 Did you know? A post office was set up at Fort Saint George on 1st June 1786. It came after John Philip Burlton of the East India Company suggested to the Governor of Madras to set it up so staff letters could be charged for.
🥻 Spotlight on handloom
A Chennai-based initiative focuses on the heritage of traditional handloom.
What’s it about? Started by Sunitha Prasad, Sondham is a city-based initiative that shines a spotlight on the culture and heritage of traditional handloom. Its second annual pop-up returns to explore traditional weaves.
- The event will focus on three narratives – Paechu, Seyalgal, and Ninaivugal. Paechu tells the stories of vibrant hues and grace of sarees. Seyalgal focuses on longevity, and Ninaivugal showcases memories associated with handloom pieces.
- The themes are interwoven to celebrate people, traditions, culture, and history. The collective represents India’s rich handloom and handmade heritage.
Other offerings: The Kondattam pop-up will have women-run businesses like Brass Tacks, Ela India, and Miniverse.
🛥️ On the sea
Yacht sailing and exploring the ocean have become new additions to Chennaiite’s recreational activities.
What’s it about? Entrepreneur and investment lawyer Nimisha Sara Philip took her love of sailing and turned it into a venture – House of Audacious, which offers exclusive yacht sailing experiences. It was an excellent opportunity since Chennai has a vast coastline.
- The yacht accommodates 16 people and comes with a three-person trained crew. It has become popular for celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, and corporate outings.
- An Ivy League yacht networking party had Harvard and Columbia graduates and featured fine dining and musicians. Makers Tribe hosted its Yacht 409: Networking on the Waves with 15 entrepreneurs.
Growing interest: Nimisha hopes the popularity of yacht sailing increases, which will hopefully accelerate the addition of a new marina in Chennai. She has also launched a Yacht Networking Club to connect with others interested in sailing.
🏏 Cricket’s grooming ground
The TNCA League is a sought-after testing ground for up-and-coming players.
What’s it about? For many cricketers in neighbouring states like Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, Chennai is a source of livelihood. Budding cricketers come to the city hoping to play in the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association’s (TNCA) First Division League. Among them are two Andhra players, Hanuma Vihari and Shoaib Mohd Khan.
- The two players are playing for Nelson SC, with 13 points from five rounds of matches. Shoaib is one of the cricketers who has benefitted from playing in Chennai, and the TNCA league was great preparation for the Ranji Trophy.
- Thanks to the excellent wickets and conditions, the league has become popular among aspiring cricketers across India.
Team’s prospects: Nelson SC has a good chance to make it to the last 4. Shoaib credits the team’s owner, management, and staff for its success.
💊 Drug information centre
A new drug information centre was inaugurated at the Stanley Medical College Hospital.
What’s it about? Health Minister Ma Subramanian inaugurated a drug information centre at the Stanley Medical College Hospital. The centre was set up in partnership with CL Baid Metha College of Pharmacy to guide patients on the usage and dosage of medications.
- The centre’s staff are trained to provide explanations on different medications, their uses, side effects, and optimal dosage. The centre will also identify safety issues from adverse reactions.
- Medical equipment worth ₹50 lakh was procured through MRF Limited’s CSR funds.
Monkeypox update: While one case of monkeypox was confirmed in India, the minister said the Centre stated that the patient’s health was stable. The state government has implemented screening procedures and designated one of its testing centres for monkeypox.
