Good morning, Chennai!
🌤️ Today’s weather: High: 37 ℃ | Low: 25 ℃ | Mostly sunny for the day.
🧐 Did you know? Guindy Park was carved out of Raj Bhavan in 1958 at the insistence of Jawaharlal Nehru. Over time, this became a national park, one of the few within city limits.
🍽️ Manoj Bhavan endures
Chennai’s renowned vegetarian restaurant opened its sixth outlet and continues to adapt to the culinary landscape.
What’s it about? The restaurant scene in Chennai has changed and evolved over the years. Veterans and newbies have been forced to innovate to the changing landscape. Among them is Manoj Bhavan, which opened its first outlet in 2016. With its new KK Nagar outlet, the restaurant has grown from its humble beginnings.
- The vegetarian dishes are made with ingredients from carefully selected vendors and directly from producers. Apart from authentic South Indian dishes, its Ashok Nagar outlet has begun serving coffee from 5.30 am.
- The pandemic was a particular challenge. However, government officials approached the restaurant to supply meals. It resulted in them ordering about 2,000 meals a day.
Expansion plans: Any current expansion plans are limited to Chennai, particularly in areas with high demand, with 3-4 outlets in the pipeline. There are also plans to open outlets abroad in a few years.
🏢 Award for sustainability
DP World received the Platinum certification from the IGBC for its Chennai Economic Zone.
What’s it about? DP World received certification from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) for the Chennai Economic Zone. The rating system recognises outstanding green design, construction, and operations. The Platinum certification is the highest standard internationally.
- The warehouses at the Economic Zone have charging points for electric vehicles and a 1MW solar panel installation. It fulfils about 40% of the state-of-the-art Free Trade Warehouse Zone (FTWZ).
- The zone is spread over 6 lakh square feet and was designed per global standards and Green Building Certification requirements.
Previous accolades: Earlier this year, DP World Nhava Sheva Business Park became the first free trade zone to get the same certification under the IGBC logistics parks and warehousing rating system.
🚰 Piped water connections
Lakhs of residents in Madipakkam, Thoraipakkam, and Madhavarram will get piped water supply next month.
What’s it about? The metrowater is conducting its final phases of trials in the aforementioned areas for piped water connections. Apart from these, more areas are expected to get water in the coming months once pipelines are laid.
- The laying of pipes began several years ago. In Madipakkam, it began in 2019; in Thoraipakkam it was in February 2020 and in Madhavaram it was in 2013.
- The delays were due to the high number of connections. About 76 million litres of water a day will be supplied in these areas.
Expanding water supply: Trial runs in Nerkundram began a couple of months ago and will be completed next month. In Ramapuram, along the Mount-Poonamallee Road, water supply is expected to start in August.
🥛 No impact on Aavin
Amul’s entry into the city isn’t expected to impact Aavin’s operations.
What’s it about? With Amul’s reported entry into Chennai and northern Tamil Nadu, the state dairy development minister said it’s unlikely to impact Aavin’s sales. He said Aavin has the potential to expand to the Middle East and Europe.
- The minister spoke of the success of current efforts to boost milk procurement from dairy farmers. The Tamil Nadu Milk Producers’ Federation gets over 34 lakh litres daily.
- Aavin will remain focussed on stabilising and improving the local market before expanding.
No change in prices: Retail prices of Aavin products is not expected to change. Private dairies have reduced their prices of milk and curd by ₹2 per litre and ₹4 per kg due to declining sales.
