♿ Providing opportunities
The Mukti Foundation’s job fair for persons with disabilities gave people employment opportunities.
What’s it about? For persons with disabilities, getting gainful employment is challenging. Some organisations, like the Mukti Foundation, want to make things easier. This year, it decided to expand its services to employment opportunities. It organised a job fair working with the Shree Geetha Bhavan Trust.
- 157 job seekers came with their certificates and official documents and interacted with 25 recruiters from companies like Amazon, SBI, and others.
- 118 people were shortlisted for positions following online interviews. Some beneficiaries have expressed their unhappiness that companies only look for degree holders.
Foundation’s work: Over the past four decades, the Mukti Foundation has provided artificial limbs to amputees and callipers to those affected by polio. They’ve distributed over 4 lakh mobility aids to date.
📷 Chennai Photo Biennale returns
The fourth edition of the photography exhibition represents a new wave of photography in Tamil Nadu.
What’s it about? The fourth edition of the Chennai Photo Biennale (CPB) returns with the theme, “Why photograph?”. Several curated exhibitions will showcase a range of subjects and perspectives. The rise of the internet has helped increase awareness of festivals and photography exhibitions for people to showcase their work.
- Sunil Gupta’s photographs of people from the LGBTQIA community will be showcased in the second phase of the event titled “Love and Light: A Site of Infinite Possibilities”.
- Shuchi Kapoor’s curation focuses on showcasing the work of women photographers and affixing the industry’s gender gap. “What Makes Me Click” will celebrate kid photographers.
Inspire and enlighten: The event hopes to showcase photography as an impactful art form that can enlighten people about the different genres within the profession.
🦌 TB among spotted deer
Wildlife officials believe the spotted deer at the IIT Madras campus may be infected with tuberculosis.
What’s it about? A few deer that roam freely inside the campus had reportedly fallen sick and died recently. Officials say the numbers are alarming, and the situation is being closely monitored. Officials remain unsure if it’s TB.
- One carcass has been sent to the Advanced Institute for Wildlife Conservation (AIWC) for analysis. Chief Wildlife Warden Srinivas R Reddy has been briefed, and a strategy will be devised if the TB results are positive.
- While IIT Madras shares a boundary with the Guindy National Park (GNP), officials say there’s no interaction between herds. If the tests return positive, the best thing to do, per experts, is to isolate and observe the deer.
Population census: Per the IIT Madras’ site, the last few censuses were conducted by its in-house wildlife club, Prakriti and GNP officials. The spotted deer population was estimated to be around 250.
🚜 Locations to dump debris
The Chennai Corporation has identified 15 locations in the city to dump construction debris.
What’s it about? Corporation commissioner Kumaragurubaran instructed individuals and private companies to dump waste only in the designated areas to avoid penalties. The civic body identified 15 locations, with one site in each zone.
- Any company found dumping debris in public spaces, vacant sites, or near waterbodies will be penalised. The Corporation has levied fines ranging from ₹2,000 to 5,000 per tonne.
- In Tondiarpet, zone 4, the civic body has collected ₹2.05 lakh in fines from individuals and shopkeepers who dumped garbage alongside waterbodies, including in the Captain Cotton and Vyasarpadi canals.
Privatisation of collection: The Chennai Corporation has privatised debris collection in Tondiarpet, Royapuram, Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Anna Nagar, Teynampet, Kodambakkam, and Adyar.
