Heritage walk curators are pivotal in keeping these experiences innovative and insightful for participants.

What’s it about? Heritage walks offer people a chance to learn about people, places, and things embedded in the city’s culture and history. These walks are organised by different groups and people offering unique perspectives. The curators help enhance the experience with tailored events like the recent night walk for women.

  • The night walk for women in Chintadripet was organised by heritage enthusiast Srishti in partnership with Goethe-Institut and Nam Veedu Nam Oor Nam Kadhai. Another similar walk was organised in Triplicane.
  • Nam Veedu Nam Oor Nam Kadhai has played an important role in organising heritage walks in Chennai since 2013. They offer new experiences like the ‘Isaiyum Varalarum’, an experimental musical heritage walk.

Showcasing the city’s history and heritage: These unique walks offer something different for participants and the organisers. Night walks and others focussed on music help keep things fresh apart from the usual historical sites.

💍 Sustainable jewellery

As the fashion world moves toward sustainability, a jewellery store in Adyar rents out its handpicked collection.

What’s it about? The fashion industry is moving toward sustainability. Aabaranam in Adyar has its handpicked collection, which it rents out instead of selling.

  • The store offers a wide variety of necklaces, earrings, and rings in modern and traditional designs. The pieces are selected after travelling to different parts of the city and towns.
  • The store aims to have exclusive pieces since new players enter the jewellery segment often.

Sustainable fashion accessories: Traditional Indian jewellers are moving toward sustainable fashion options. The mining industry, which produces precious metals like gold and silver, has contributed to the destruction of ecology.

The BS degree programme at IIT Madras attracts people from 18 to 80-year-olds.

What’s it about? Many higher education institutions in the country don’t have adequate opportunities for senior citizens. One exception is IIT Madras and its BS programme, which has students from 18 to 80 years old. For 82-year-old Nandakumar, it has been a dream to pursue a BS degree in Data Science and Applications.

  • For Nandakumar, not only was he accepted, but IIT also decided to waive his tuition fee. The BS programme is bringing in youngsters like 18-year-old Delvin also.
  • The BS programme is attractive thanks to the 75% fee concession. This gives opportunities for students from economically weaker backgrounds.

Programme details: The four-year online programme is open to all, irrespective of age and background. Over 29,000 are pursuing the degree in just one year. It includes over 3,000 working professionals.

👮 Cameras to catch errant drivers

The Chennai Traffic Police will install cameras exclusively to address wrong-side driving.

What’s it about? Wrong-side driving is becoming a menace on the city’s roads, leading to over 350 injuries and a dozen fatalities every year. Each police station has identified six junctions where this is common. The police have decided to install cameras to catch and penalise drivers.

  • The first phase will cover Nandanam, Spencer’s junction, and Poonamallee High Road near Koyambedu. The traffic violation detection cameras are placed in the opposite direction of the road.
  • Special teams will be placed at accident-prone locations with tripod cameras. These 360-degree portable cameras are installed at a height of six feet to track vehicles.

Where are they happening? These incidents are most common in areas with ongoing metro rail and civic infrastructure work. Motorists take shortcuts to avoid the diversions and long routes.
