Zaragoza returns with a rich coaching background, including stints in Asia and Europe. His appointment follows the departure of Simon Grayson and aims to revitalise the team.

💰 Start-up funding dips

There has been an 80% decrease in start-up funding in Bengaluru during the 2023-24 fiscal.

What’s it about? The Mid-Year Review of State Finances for the 2023-24 fiscal year has noted an 80% decrease in start-up funding in Bengaluru. This is part of a broader 46% decline in Karnataka’s Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) during the first half of the current fiscal year. The downturn in the Private Equity/Venture Capital sector is attributed to global economic and geopolitical challenges.

  • Start-up funding in Bengaluru, India’s start-up capital, mirrors a national trend with a 70% decline in start-up funding.
  • A significant factor is the 60% decrease in FDI in the services and computer software market, notably impacting Karnataka.

Boosting growth: Despite the investment slowdown, the government’s guarantee schemes aim to boost economic growth by increasing household savings and consumption.

Bengaluru launches an innovative waste treatment park.

What happened? Electronics City Industrial Township Authority (ELCITA) has established a ‘sustainability park’ in Electronics City, Bengaluru. This pioneering project successfully implements a zero-waste-to-landfill policy, processing 10 tonnes of waste daily. Food waste is converted to biogas, dry waste is sorted into 38 categories for recycling, and reject waste is used for cement production.

  • The park represents a significant stride in addressing Bengaluru’s waste management challenges.
  • Advanced processes at the park include biogas production, recycling, and converting sewage into usable water.

Green facility: The facility has earned a platinum rating from the Indian Green Building Council and was awarded ‘Most Innovative Project’ by the Confederation of Indian Industry.

🛣️ White-topping roads

Bengaluru is set to undergo extensive road white-topping.

What’s it about? Karnataka’s Deputy CM and Bengaluru Development Minister, DK Shivakumar, announced plans for widespread road development in Bengaluru using white-topping. With ₹1,000 crore allocated for this project, it will be executed in phases and discussed with city legislators.

  • White-topping is prioritised due to its long lifespan of 25 to 40 years.
  • The city faces challenges with potholes, partly due to the rapid increase in vehicle registrations and frequent digging for utility works.

Ward-level problem: Shivakumar also mentioned making separate arrangements at the ward level to address the pothole problem in Bengaluru.
