Good morning, Bengaluru!

☁️ Today’s weather: High: 30 ℃ | Low: 20 ℃ | A generally cloudy day.

🧐 Did you know? The Palike Bazaar in Vijayanagar is South India’s first underground air-conditioned bazaar.

🍔 Jumboking expanding

The quick-service restaurant (QSR) chain will expand its presence in the city with new stores.

What’s it about? The QSR chain considers Bengaluru an important market and plans to add 12 to 15 new stores annually. The burger chain already has a presence in 175 locations. The company’s revenue for the first quarter was ₹35 crore, and aims to increase that to ₹40 crore for the upcoming third quarter.

  • The company is bullish on Bengaluru due to its large young population. It plans to open 150 to 200 stores in Bengaluru over the next decade. The company first entered the city 12 years ago.
  • The first burger store was opened in the city in HSR Layout in August. Its average per-store sales is equivalent to those in Mumbai and Delhi.

Further expansions: The chain wants to have 500 stores in the top 5 to 6 cities to help provide efficiency in supply chain management and marketing. The company will enter new markets like Kolkata, Chennai, and Ahmedabad while expanding in existing markets like Mumbai, Delhi, and Hyderabad.

👮 Guidelines for night traffic

19 guidelines have been issued for the traffic police to monitor traffic at night.

What’s it about? With an increase in traffic at night causing more accidents, the Joint Commissioner of Traffic MN Anucheth issued 19 guidelines for the traffic police officers working night shifts.

  • Officers should maintain information on workers like crane operators, political leaders, volunteers, ambulance and auto drivers, and civil defence personnel.
  • In areas where miscreants are known to operate, officers are required to enhance their patrolling. For general safety, officers will wear reflective jackets to help manage traffic and prevent congestion at hotels, bars, and restaurants.

Women’s safety: When handling complaints from women, officers must forward these immediately to the relevant police stations, take necessary actions, and if required, escort the complainants to the station.

🛍️ More underground bazaars?

The BBMP is planning to open more underground markets for street vendors.

What’s it about? Following the opening of the city’s first air-conditioned underground market, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has plans for more and has begun identifying suitable locations. However, some street vendors are sceptical.

  • The BBMP’s criteria for a site is that it should be able to house 50-60 vendors. Officials believe the south zone has several viable spots where the demand for such markets could be high.
  • The BBMP will begin a survey to identify the locations and then prepare a proposal.

Pushback from vendors: Some vendors believe relocating to underground markers will hurt their businesses. Most of their customers are pedestrians and two-wheeler riders who shop quickly. Some vendors reported that those relocated to the underground market were experiencing losses.

🌊 Additional sewage lines needed

A survey showed the city needs 400 km of additional sewage lines to keep lakes pollution-free.

What’s it about? A Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) survey showed that the city needs 400 km of additional swage lines and nine more sewage treatment plants (STPs) for a comprehensive sewage collection system and to prevent untreated sewage from polluting lakes.

  • It would cost about ₹850 crore to address the gaps in sewage management. The BWSSB hopes to secure the funds through a World Bank loan.
  • About 80% of the sewage system work is complete. Officials hope the remaining will be finished by the end of this year. New sewage lines are needed in the 110 villages added to the civic limits in 2008.

Keeping lakes clean: Conservation activists have raised concerns about the poor water quality of about 104 lakes due to sewage inflow. There have been several complaints about sewage entering stormwater drains and making its way into water bodies.
