🗑️ Waste management plan
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar directs Bengaluru authorities to devise long-term waste management solutions.
What’s it about? Following criticism of the Karnataka government’s plan to find 100-acre land parcels for waste management, Shivakumar has instructed the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to explore sustainable solutions. Currently, the city’s waste is mostly dumped in landfills, with some wet waste processed in six plants, causing local opposition due to odour issues.
- The BBMP is considering ward-level waste disposal and processing, with expert Sandhya Narayan suggesting allocating 1-2 acres of land per ward for this purpose.
- The city previously experimented with biomethanisation plants, and efforts are underway to revive 13 existing plants and set up four new ones.
Managing waste effectively: The Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) is refocusing on waste collection tenders and developing new plans in line with Shivakumar’s directions. The goal is to manage waste effectively while addressing health concerns and local opposition.
☔ Rain relief
Bengaluru received scattered rainfall, providing relief from the recent scorching heat, with more showers predicted in the upcoming days.
Showers and waterlogging: The city experienced rainfall on Monday, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) recording 4 mm of rain by 6 pm. While some areas had morning showers, others like Banaswadi, Basavanagudi, and Whitefield received light rain in the evening. However, certain parts of the city faced waterlogging issues, with traffic police managing the situation.
- The onset of the northeast (retreating) monsoon was slow last week, but the dissipation of cyclones Tej and Hamoon is expected to strengthen northeasterly winds, leading to more rainfall in the coming days.
Normal rainfall: A Prasad from IMD Bengaluru mentioned that the twin cyclones over the Bay of Bengal region caused a delay in the northeasterly winds, resulting in increased daytime temperatures and a dry spell. However, the retreating monsoon is anticipated to bring normal rainfall to Bengaluru and nearby districts in early November.
