💻 Bengaluru Airport’s security upgrade
Kempegowda International Airport revamps security with CTX machines.
What’s it about? Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport is set to become the first in India to eliminate the need for removing gadgets from bags during security checks. This advancement is possible thanks to the introduction of CTX (Computer Tomography X-ray) machines in Terminal 2 (T2), aimed at streamlining security procedures.
- The CTX system, integrated with the Automatic Tray Retrieval System (ATRS), will allow for scanning without removing electronic devices.
- To be used for domestic travellers initially, this system is expected to be operational by December 2023.
Convenience: This initiative marks a significant improvement in airport security efficiency and passenger convenience at Bengaluru’s airport.
🚌 Panic buttons in public vehicles
Karnataka mandates panic buttons in public vehicles for enhanced safety.
What’s it about? The state transport department has issued a directive requiring all public service and goods vehicles with national permits to install tracking devices with emergency panic buttons. Set to take effect from December 1, 2023, vehicle owners have until November 30, 2024, to comply.
- The devices, priced at ₹7,599 (excluding GST), are available from 13 empanelled manufacturers.
- Non-compliance will result in the denial of fitness certificate renewals by Regional Transport Offices (RTOs).
Improving safety: This initiative, covering taxis, buses, and school buses, aims to bolster safety measures for women and children in public transportation.
🚴🏽 ‘Pedal to Metro’ campaign
Bengaluru launches eco-friendly ‘Pedal to Metro’ initiative.
What’s it about? Bengaluru’s innovative ‘Pedal to Metro’ campaign, organized to encourage bicycle usage for commuting to metro stations, is spearheaded by the Council for Active Mobility (CFAM), in collaboration with the World Resources Institute (WRI) and Bengaluru Political Action Committee (B-PAC). Launched at the Yelachenahalli Metro Station, the campaign has installed 200 bicycle stands across nine metro stations, and 11 more at BMTC and metro transit centres.
- The initiative has received strong support, particularly in South Bengaluru, with many residents cycling to metro stations.
- Bengaluru’s Bicycle Mayor, Satya Shankaran, highlighted cycling’s benefits and the campaign’s aim to identify safe routes for cyclists.
Sustainability: This campaign underscores Bengaluru’s commitment to promoting sustainable and healthy modes of transportation, aligning with broader urban mobility and environmental goals.
🏭 Climate Action and Resilience Plan
BBMP unveils Bengaluru Climate Action and Resilience Plan (BCAP).
Who are they? The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has launched the Bengaluru Climate Action and Resilience Plan (BCAP), targeting net-zero emissions by 2050. This initiative positions Bengaluru as a leader in climate action, aiming to be one of the few cities globally, and the third in India, to have a global standard climate action plan.
- Key actions include establishing a Climate Action Cell for efficient BCAP implementation and launching the #BluGreenUru campaign to engage citizens and stakeholders.
- The plan covers major sectors like energy, transportation, waste management, water, air quality, urban planning, and disaster management.
Collaborative effort: Developed in collaboration with C40 Cities and WRI India, the BCAP is data-driven, inclusive, and collaborative, focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and building resilient communities. The plan includes Bengaluru’s first-ever GHG inventory and a Climate Change Risk and Vulnerability Assessment (CCRAVA), guiding the city towards sustainable and resilient development.
