🎨 Art carnival
Chennaiyil Oar Oviya Sangamam will bring together artists from across India for a one-of-a-kind open exhibition-cum sale.
What’s it about? Inspired by Bengaluru’s Chitra Santhe, artist and founder of SK’s The Lines & Curves and Indian Art Factory, Selvakannan, is bringing together artists from across the country for a unique art show. The exhibits will include paintings, beads, leaf art, sculptures, and more. The goal is to help budding artists showcase their work and network with veterans.
- The carnival will have over 1,000 works of art from 125 artists. 70% of the participating artists in this carnival are women.
- While Chennai has several art galleries, they mostly prefer experienced and senior artists to showcase their work. Events like this give up-and-coming artists a platform.
What’s next? For Selvakannan, this is only the beginning. He wants to invite 500 artists for next year’s edition and ensure Chennai becomes a hub for artists and events like this.
🌾 Sustainable dining
The ITC Grand Chola will mark World Environment Day with a display of sustainable dining options.
What’s it about? Since sustainability has become ubiquitous, climate-friendly initiatives and practices have extended to all aspects of life, including food. To commemorate World Environment Day, the ITC Grand Chola will host a unique eco-conscious culinary event this month. Their chefs have curated a menu using time-honoured farming techniques.
- The menu features heirloom rice, a traditional form of rice cultivated and passed down through generations. The event hopes to raise awareness about preserving biodiversity and a return to traditional agricultural practices.
- Heirloom rice showcases agricultural heritage and a sustainable future for farming. It highlights land restoration since it supports revitalising degraded landscapes.
Consumer impact: The event will also educate guests on the environmental impact of food production and consumption and the importance of responsible luxury.
🗳️ Chennai goes to the DMK
The election results showed DMK’s strength in the city, but the BJP performed better than expected.
What’s it about? All three constituencies in Chennai went to the DMK in what was an expected outcome. However, the interesting note was that the BJP came in second place in two of the three seats, signalling a better-than-expected performance.
- Dayanidhi Maran won Chennai Central for the fourth time with over 4.13 lakh votes. His rival, Vinoj P Selvam of the BJP, secured only 1.69 lakh votes. In Chennai South, the BJP’s Tamilisai Soundararajan trailed Thamizhachi Thangapandian by over 2 lakh votes.
- Chennai North also went to the DMK, with sitting MP Kalanidhi Veerasamy securing nearly 5 lakh votes compared to his AIADMK rival R Manohar, who came in second with over 1.58 lakh votes.
Beating expectations: Chennai South, with its upper caste localities like Mylapore, Mambalam, and Mandaveli, was expected to be a bastion for the BJP. However, it didn’t turn out that way since the margin was over 2 lakh votes.
🌧️ Rainfall relief
Some widespread rainfall brought much-needed relief from the soaring summer temperatures.
What’s it about? With the city experiencing widespread rainfall on Tuesday, the Meteorological Department has forecast the same for at least another 48 hours. 11 districts of the state were also issued yellow warnings.
- A cyclonic circulation over Kerala is beginning to shift to Tamil Nadu and its neighbourhood. This system is mainly responsible for the cloudy skies and rainfall.
- In Chennai, areas like Egmore, Nungambakkam, and T Nagar experienced moderate rainfall on Tuesday evening, bringing much-needed relief from high temperatures and humidity.
Warnings issued: The Regional Meteorological Centre advised fishermen to not venture out to sea until June 8 since the winds are expected to reach 55 kmph over the Tamil Nadu coast.
