🧑💻 Tech talent in southern cities
Southern cities Bengaluru and Chennai are spearheading India’s tech talent demand, based on a recent Quess Corp report.
Report highlights: The ‘Annual Digital Skills Report FY24’ highlights South India as the frontrunner in tech hiring, claiming 68% of the nation’s tech talent requisitions. Bengaluru leads with 49.4% of demand, followed significantly by Chennai at 9.6%. Other notable cities include Pune, Hyderabad, and the NCR, demonstrating robust hiring activity.
- The commercial real estate sector in these cities also mirrors this growth, particularly in office space leasing.
- Tech demand is not limited to metros but is also rising in tier-II and tier-III cities like Ahmedabad and Jaipur.
Sectoral and skills demand: Sectors such as BFSI, automotive, and consulting are witnessing sustained demand for tech professionals, driven by emerging technologies like AI and data analytics. Moreover, significant growth in skills related to cloud computing and cybersecurity points towards a promising future for India’s tech industry, bolstered by its robust IT infrastructure and innovative capabilities.
📡 Radar placement challenge
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is seeking rooftop space on Bengaluru’s skyscrapers for a Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) installation, due to the lack of suitable vacant land.
Urban constraints: IMD’s struggle to find a suitable location for DWR arises from Bengaluru’s dense infrastructure. The city’s optimal functioning of DWR requires an unobstructed space, which is now considered on skyscrapers. Currently, IMD relies on radar data from Goa, Tamil Nadu, and satellites due to these spatial constraints.
- A 10×10 metre area with a minimal elevation angle is necessary for the radar to function correctly.
- The location must ensure no high-rise construction within a 30-40 km radius to avoid interference with the radar’s signals.
Weather forecasting needs: The urgency for a local DWR in Bengaluru stems from its varied weather patterns and the need for accurate, timely forecasts. IMD officials highlight the radar’s importance in tracking thunderstorms, cloud movements, and other critical weather phenomena, which are essential for effective nowcasts.
🚇 Green Line extension progress
Bengaluru’s Green Line Metro extension from Nagasandra to Madavara is set to commence operations by the end of July, following a five-year delay.
Project overview: This 3.7-km stretch includes three stations—Manjunath Nagar, Chikkabidarakallu, and Madavara—and was initially planned to open in August 2019. Hindered by various setbacks, including contractual and material supply issues, the project’s completion was postponed.
- The extension, costing ₹298 crore, is anticipated to significantly ease travel for local residents and visitors to the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre.
- Final construction phases, including painting, granite installation, and system checks, are scheduled to be completed by June.
Challenges and resolution: The project encountered several obstacles, from labour shortages affecting timely completion to disputes over construction permits, which were eventually resolved through financial settlements. Despite these challenges, BMRCL officials are optimistic about the July operational launch, following safety inspections and trial runs.
🤱 Daycare support for women police officers
Bengaluru city police have established two daycare centres for women officers to facilitate a better work-life balance.
Initiative details: Located at Vidhana Soudha and the city police commissioner’s office, these centres aim to support female officers by providing reliable childcare facilities while they are on duty. This initiative, launched under Project Rashmi by Bengaluru Smart City Ltd, reflects a progressive step towards inclusivity and support within the force.
- The centres are equipped with child-friendly amenities such as toys, books, sleeping couches, and food preparation areas.
- Currently, these facilities collectively cater to 40 children, with plans underway to expand this service to more stations.
Challenges and impact: Despite the positive feedback, extending the daycare service across all stations remains challenging due to logistical and financial constraints. Nonetheless, the existing centres have significantly alleviated the stress of childcare for many women officers, enhancing their focus and efficiency at work.
