🚰 AI and IoT to manage borewells
The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) introduces Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to regulate borewell usage amidst the city’s water crisis.
What’s it about? To address the acute water shortage in Bengaluru, BWSSB has demonstrated the use of AI and IoT technologies at a borewell in Benson Town. These technologies will enable the analysis of flow patterns, regulation of motor operations, and automatic shutdowns when water levels decrease, thereby minimising manual intervention and ensuring sustainable borewell usage.
- The system aims to prevent unscientific exploitation of borewells and reduce the risk of soil contamination and blockages.
- BWSSB has successfully piloted this technology in five borewells and plans to expand its implementation.
Other efforts: As part of its efforts to conserve water, BWSSB has introduced various measures, including mandatory use of tap aerators and restrictions on the use of potable water for non-essential purposes. With approximately 6,900 borewells dried up in Bengaluru, these initiatives are crucial for managing the city’s water resources effectively.
🛣️ Automated LED signages on highway
To improve road safety during nighttime, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced automated LED signages at black spots along the Chennai-Bengaluru Highway (NH 4).
What’s it about? The initiative targets areas known for fatal accidents between Walajah town in Ranipet and Tirupattur district. Small automated LED projectors have been installed on electric lamp poles along the median, projecting warnings such as ‘go slow’, ‘don’t drink and drive’, and ‘obey traffic rules’ onto the carriageway. The projectors, placed 25 meters apart, operate from 6 pm to 6 am, coinciding with street light operation, to alert motorists and reduce accidents during the night.
- The automated signages have been installed at 13 black spots covering Ranipet, Vellore, and Tirupattur districts.
- The highway has a daily traffic of 1.2 lakh motorists, with frequent jaywalking due to habitations along the route.
More being done: The new safety measure is part of NHAI’s efforts to enhance road safety, particularly at night when accidents are more frequent. The stretch currently has about 1,800 street light poles, and additional safety infrastructure such as underpasses and foot overbridges are under construction near black spots to further protect road users.
💧 ABB India’s campus certified ‘Water Positive’
ABB India’s Peenya campus in Bengaluru has been certified ‘water positive’ by the Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA) Council.
What’s it about? The Peenya campus, with an index of 1.05, is the third of ABB India’s six manufacturing locations to achieve this certification, following the Nelamangala campus and Nashik Plant 1. The company’s water management strategy includes rainwater use and recharge, reduction in freshwater use, water recycling, and real-time monitoring of water consumption.
- The Peenya unit has implemented water-efficient fixtures, a sewage treatment plant (STP), and a drip-based irrigation system to enhance water recyclability by 12% compared to the previous year.
- The campus reduced its freshwater dependency by 22% through various conservation initiatives.
The green path: ABB India is committed to turning all its manufacturing locations ‘water positive’ in the coming years as part of its sustainability goals. Additionally, all their owned manufacturing locations in the country have been certified under the Green Factory Building rating system by IGBC, contributing to an 87.8% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions versus the 2019 baseline.

With plans to open more brand-owned outlets in the city within the next six months, Mr. Philly’s is set to become a go-to destination for American cuisine enthusiasts.
