🏗️ Bengaluru-Mysuru highway FOBs
The Karnataka government plans to build 24 foot over bridges (FOBs) along the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway.
What’s it about? In response to concerns from villagers near the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway, 24 FOBs will be constructed. These bridges, including two in Mysuru at Siddalingapura and Kalastavadi, aim to improve safety and facilitate pedestrian movement. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) will oversee the project, focusing on villages in Bengaluru Urban, Mysuru, and Mandya districts.
- The initiative follows increased fatalities on the highway, with 100 deaths since its inauguration in March.
- Additional safety measures, such as higher medians, are planned for six black spots in Mandya district.
Accident-prone: The 119-kilometre expressway, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has seen a surge in accidents attributed to overspeeding, poor road design, and lack of driver education.
🧒🏽 Launch of Poshan Innovation Platform
The Poshan Innovation Platform has been introduced in Bengaluru to bolster maternal and child health innovations.
What’s it about? The Poshan Innovation Platform, India’s first incubator for innovations in maternal and child health, was launched in Bengaluru. It aims to support and scale innovations, with a focus on nutrition and health, particularly addressing stunting, wasting in children, and anaemia in women. This initiative is a collaboration between the India Nutrition Collaborative and the office of the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Indian government.
- The platform seeks innovations in gender, digital, and market equity, and nutrition-seeking behaviour.
- It addresses the challenge of ineffectively delivered health services and aims to overcome barriers in reaching the last mile.
Bad state of nutrition: India’s ranking in the Global Hunger Index 2023 (101 out of 116) highlights the critical need for such innovative solutions in nutrition and health.
📘 English-medium in Karnataka schools
Karnataka plans to introduce English-medium sections in 500 more government schools.
What’s it about? The initiative expands bilingual education in Karnataka, with around 2,403 existing schools already offering both English and Kannada mediums. This plan is in addition to the expansion of Karnataka Public Schools (KPS). Challenges include teacher shortages and the transition to English-only textbooks in certain subjects for the first batch of bilingual students.
