🩺 Namma Clinic operations
Over two dozen Namma Clinics in the city will soon be operational from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
What’s it about? Two months after Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao announced that 100 Namma Clinics will operate from noon to 8 p.m., the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has identified only 29 clinics, and none operate at the promised timings.
- The extension of the timings of the clinics came in the wake of Rao’s visit to the AAP government’s Mohalla Clinics in Delhi in August.
- Namma Clinics are currently open from 1 a.m. to 4 p.m. The BBMP didn’t receive formal communication from the state government until early September on changes in the timings.
Challenges: Previously, due to a manpower shortage in the healthcare system, extending the timings at the clinics wasn’t possible. BBMP Chief Health Officer AS Balasundar said the number of staff needs to be doubled at all clinics.
🚗 Scrapped vehicle issues
As the scrapping of vehicles at the Devanahalli begins, officials are looking to resolve the issue of extending concession benefits.
What’s it about? At the state’s first Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RVSF) in Devanahalli, the scrapping of old unfit vehicles has begun. Transport Department officials said they will resolve the issue where concession benefits are extended to vehicle owners.
- Per the 2022 Karnataka Registered Vehicle Scrapping Policy, after a vehicle is scrapped at an RVSF, the owner is given a ‘Certificate of Deposit’ (COD) used for tax concessions when buying a new vehicle.
- The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and the National Informatics Centre (NIC) are developing software to have a uniform system.
What’s the norm? Per existing policy, if a vehicle owner is paid ₹1 lakh as tax, they’re eligible to get 25% of that as a concession when buying a new vehicle.
🦼 Struggle to find an accessible apartment
A woman shared her experience of being unable to find a wheelchair-friendly apartment.
What’s it about? Mrunmaiy, a quadriplegic, is wheelchair-bound and was informed by her landlord that she needed to vacate the apartment they had been living in since moving to the city. Finding an apartment that’s wheelchair accessible has been an ordeal that she shared on social media.
- Her motorised wheelchair weighs 130 kg, and she can’t be lifted with it. She needs an entrance without steps.
- For accessing bathrooms, most are narrow. An accessible one will have to be at least 25 inches wide. In some cases, there’s a washbasin that blocks the entrance for a wheelchair. The lifts in some apartments are also narrow.
Response: Since posting about her experience on social media, others have responded with how her experience put things in perspective and offered assistance in finding a new home.
