Good morning, Chennai!

🌧️ Today’s weather: Cloudy with the chance of some rain.

🧐 Did you know? Chennai got its first public tennis courts in 1946 thanks to JPL Shenoy, then Commissioner of the Corporation of Madras. The first such court was at the Egmore playground.

Borussia Dortmund and the AMM Foundation had a football training camp for players and coaches.

What’s it about? German football club Borussia Dortmund and the Murugappa Group’s philanthropic arm, the AMM Foundation, began a four-day training camp for players and coaches of the Murugappa Youth Football Academy (MYFA).

  • Representatives from Dortmund coached the players and coaches in special drills and sessions that focused on on-pitch communication and coordination.
  • They also had hands-on classroom sessions with the foundation’s coaches. These will continue as virtual sessions in the coming months.

What’s the long-term goal? The partnership’s goal is to establish a system with the coaches to ensure the players aged between 10 and 17 are improving their overall game and having fun.

🌊 Dumping sewage into the sea

(Image credits: Omjasvin MD’s Twitter post)

The state environment department has concluded that the metrowater department is releasing sewage into the sea.

What’s happening? A report submitted to Environment Secretary Supriya Sahu stated that officials inspected the Thiruvottiyur beach and found untreated sewage flowing into the sea near the tuna fishing harbour. A notification will be sent to metrowater to stop this practice and divert sewage to a nearby treatment plant.

  • The raw sewage caused the coast to turn black in colour. It was also entering the site of the upcoming harbour. Installing underground pipes wasn’t permitted on roads laid and operated by the highway department.
  • The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) didn’t give metrowater permission to lay pipes under the Ennore expressway. A suggestion to change the design was proposed, but it hasn’t been done.

Adverse effects: The delays are leading to the degradation of the sea and are killing local biodiversity. Monsoon foam covers the sea and kills marine life.

🐕 Pet adoption awareness

A recent camp helped raise awareness of pet adoption processes.

What’s it about? The Kalakshetra Exhibition Grounds was the venue for a recent event where attendees could learn about the processes involved in adopting a pet. Organised by iAdopt, the event was a platform for organisations and adopters to connect with the motto, Protect, Rescue, Adopt, Repeat. Their lives matter. Rescue animals.

  • The Animal Welfare Board of India has rules and protocols that organisations and NGOs that engage in pet adoption should follow. Adoption coordinators have shows and events to showcase rescued dogs to possible owners.
  • Some basic information needs to be known about the adopter, like the number of residents in their house, the size of their house, etc.

🧑‍🔬 Every Child a Scientist initiative

The MS Swaminathan Research Foundation’s (MSRF) initiative has expanded into the digital space.

What’s it about? The MSRF’s signature Every Child a Scientist programme has expanded into the digital space over the past few years. The project has been running since 2002 that aims to increase passion and interest in science among students.

  • Given the gap in access to technology between private and public schools, the programme invites batches of 50 students from Class 6 to 8 from several Chennai corporation schools.
  • They’re shown examples of high-tech facilities like a microbiology lab. They also interact with scientists from different disciplines and visit libraries. They’re also taught to work on experiments aligned with their school syllabus.

What’s next for the programme? The goal is to cover 450 students every year and expand this initiative to five MSRF centres across India. Recently, the foundation conducted the programme at Poompuhar exclusively for kids of fisher families with plans to expand it to tribal children in Kerala and Odisha.
