🧐 Did you know? T Nagar was the first planned town in Chennai. In 1923, the Madras Presidency Government, as part of its town planning activities, began the process of setting up a modern town called Thyagaraya Nagar. It was established with schools, parks, housing areas, temples, and shops. At the centre was Panagal Park.
🚉 Plan to commercialise MRTS stations

CUMTA is looking to commercialise MRTS stations as part of its merger with the Chennai Metro.
What’s it about? The CUMTA has selected Black Brix as the consultant to prepare a feasibility report to commercialise 18 MRTS stations. Apart from this, the company will also prepare a detailed project report. From 2001-2006, the state government allowed the CMDA to plan for the commercialisation of the air space above MRTS Phase II stations. However, the project never materialised.
- In the first stage of this project, the operation and maintenance of the station will be done by the Indian Railways. The next stage will be the complete takeover by the Chennai Metro.
- The project involves the commercialisation of the 500-metre area along the station. The spaces will be used to build recreational and entertainment facilities.
Who said what? CUMTA special officer I Jayakumar said it’s the first instance post-Covid that a study will be done for potential office spaces at the stations. The plan is to commercialise and develop the spaces with minimal hindrance to the public.
🗣️ Youth Parliament for students


The Corporation will hold Youth Parliament in Corporation schools to teach leadership and general knowledge.
What’s it about? The Corporation will hold a Youth Parliament in 70 corporation schools to teach students leadership skills and general knowledge. Last week, Mayor R Priya inaugurated the session in a school in North Chennai.
- The principals of the schools will prepare students to speak on various topics like the environment, healthcare, and civic issues. It’ll involve students from classes 9-12.
- Among the places where the Youth Parliament is being implemented are ward 42 in Tondiarpet, ward 36 in Sharma Nagar, and ward 138 at MGR Nagar.
Usefulness: For students, participating in the Youth Parliament is a way to improve their English and communication skills.
📱 App for diabetics


A city hospital has developed an app for diabetes patients, especially those with diabetic feet.
What’s it about? MV Hospital for Diabetes launched “MV Diabeat”, a new app for diabetic patients. The app can be used to consult the multidisciplinary team at the hospital for questions concerning a diabetic patient’s feet and treatment.
- India has the unfortunate distinction of being the diabetes capital of the world. This app can help patients get the medical care necessary even at night.
- The hospital has 30 years of experience and helped save thousands of people from their legs being amputated.
Related ailments: Rodica Pop-Busui of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) said it’s important for doctors who treat diabetic patients to diagnose heart-related issues early. There’s a high mortality rate among diabetic patients with heart ailments.
🏗️ Singara Chennai 2.0 projects


The Corporation was given the green light for 42 projects under the Singara Chennai 2.0 initiative.
What’s it about? The state government has permitted the Corporation to implement various projects under the Singara Chennai 2.0 initiative in the coming year. The budget outlay for the projects is ₹98.59 crore.
- It includes the construction and renovation of parks, school buildings, sponge parks, and crematoriums. In total, 16 buildings in schools will be demolished and rebuilt.
- The parks will be user and environmentally friendly for senior citizens and kids. The sponge parks will tackle inundation during the rainy seasons.
Victoria Public Hall: The ground floor of the Victoria Public Hall will become a permanent museum. The first floor will have a board room and a VIP lounge. Outside, there’ll be room for an outdoor museum and performances.
