π Zero waste campaign
Beyond Books and the Goethe Institut promote sustainability through kids books and activities.
What’s it about? Beyond Books and the Goethe Institut library, in partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute India’s Roots & Shoots program, have begun a month-long ‘No Waste November’ campaign. The goal is to promote sustainability through kids books and activities.
- The campaign includes workshops featuring books and book-based activities. Among the topics discussed are migration, endangered species, and waste management.
- The Roots & Shoots program highlights different topics each month. The focus is on empowering youngsters since they represent the future.
Importance of books and reading: The workshops include books and reading since they’re a gateway for kids to expand their horizons by learning about new concepts, cultures, lives, and experiences.
π¨ Symbols of modern ambition
Sanjeeva Rao’s new exhibition explores society’s pursuit of excellence and ambition.
What’s it about? The Race Towards Tomorrow exhibition explores themes of ambition and the unknown destinations that propel humanity forward. The compositions feature layered figures in motion next to symbols like televisions, chairs, and vehicles.
- The exhibition represents how people move from one phase to another and learn from good and bad experiences. Objects like TVs and vehicles symbolise modern ambition.
- They represent the cyclical nature of ambition and aspiration to ask questions like this: does the pursuit of progress lead to true satisfaction?
The zebra motif: A regular figure in his works is the zebra. It’s a metaphor for a zebra crossing. Rao compares humans to zebras – they work hard without always knowing the purpose behind it.
π Caring for an ailing monkey
The Madras HC allowed a vet’s plea to check on an ailing monkey at the Vandalur Zoo.
What’s it about? The Madras High Court allowed a veterinarian to visit an ailing animal currently living at the Vandalur Zoo. The Justice allowed Dr V Vallaiappan, president of Prani Mithran, to check on his health condition on November 9.
- The doctor petitioned the court for interim custody of the animal – a bonnet macaque, which he had treated for paralysis and other injuries suffered due to dog bites.
- He asked for custody since the monkey still needed continued treatment.
Previous help: A forest department official brought the premature baby monkey to a camp for animals. The monkey was fighting for its life due to its injuries. The forest department then took custody.
β Low pressure
After a lull, rains are back in Chennai due to a brewing low pressure.
What’s it about? The northeast monsoon could become active over the city and other parts of the state. A low pressure area may form over the Bay of Bengal and intensify into a depression.
- Based on weather models, the system could move towards the Tamil Nadu coast or drift further north. If it does come close to the city’s coast, Chennai could receive heavy rains.
- Daily bulletins from the regional meteorological centre haven’t made any official announcements yet for a new weather system. However, the forecast says Chennai and neighbouring districts like Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Thanjavur will get heavy rainfall.
Next two weeks: Weather blogger K Srikanth said there could be more rainfall over the next 15-20 days. The amount of rain will depend on the weather system’s movement in the Bay of Bengal.
