🧹 Picking up after the air show

The Chennai Corporation collected 18.5 tonnes of waste during and after the event.

What’s it about? While the route toward Marina Beach was jammed as lakhs of people gathered for the Air Show, the beach was quite clean just a few hours after everyone left. The Chennai Corporation workers collected over 18 tonnes of waste.

  • 128 skilled workers were deployed across several locations to help manage waste collection. 30 workers covered the sandy stretches and 17 on the service road.
  • The public played their part by adhering to waste disposal guidelines. Other stakeholders, like shopkeepers and other government departments, were also involved.

The approach: Urbaser Sumeet, the private contractor of solid waste management, began work with a high-end mechanical sweeper the night before the event.


👩‍💻 Cybersecurity centre

IIT Madras launched a centre on cybersecurity to boost research and innovation.

What’s it about? The ‘Centre for Cybersecurity, Trust and Reliability’ (CyStar) was inaugurated at IIT Madras to push the boundaries of research and innovation in cybersecurity. The team at CyStar comprises a wide range of experts.

  • The centre will collaborate locally and globally with academia, research institutions, and the industry to equip students and professionals with the expertise to tackle cyber challenges.
  • The centre’s focus will extend to several sectors like finance, healthcare, automotive, and electronics.

Research components: The centre will pioneer advancements in blockchain, security for AI models, quantum security, IoT security, and cryptography.


🏞️ Kalaignar Park inaugurated

Chief Minister MK Stalin officially inaugurated the Kalaignar Centenary Park.

What’s it about? Built for ₹46 crore, the Kalaignar Centenary Park on Cathedral Road was formally inaugurated by MK Stalin. The facility boasts several world-class features and entertainment options for the public.

  • Among the park’s features are a 500-metre zipline, a 120-foot snow-covered pathway, a 16-metre glasshouse with rare plant and animal species, a restaurant, and a playground for kids.
  • The park is spread across 6.09 acres of land. It will be open between 10 am and 8 pm, with a ₹100 entrance fee for adults and ₹50 for kids.

Awarding designers: Following the inauguration, Stalin inspected the installations and presented certificates to the designers of the park.


🚇 Metro’s assurance on school building

The Chennai Metro assured parents and officials following cracks developing on a school building on Santhome High Road.

What’s it about? Parents of students studying at a matriculation school protested over worries about the school building’s safety since cracks were developing due to metro construction work in the area. Metro officials have assured them that the structure is safe.

  • Nearly 50 parents demanded immediate action to fix the weakened building. They resorted to a protest since they received no response from the school management.
  • A team from the Chennai Metro inspected the building and assured the parents that the structure was sound and additional inspections would take place.

Construction activity: One Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) has already passed underneath, and another will cross this week. Metro officials will inspect the building again after the second TBM passes to assure the parents.
