Wakefit’s Sleep Champion
W

Good morning, Bengaluru!

☁️ Today’s weather: High: 30 ℃ | Low: 20 ℃ | A generally cloudy day.

🧐 Did you know? The most thriving industry to start in Bangalore was the cotton mills. It owes its beginnings to the American Civil War which drove the demand for cotton and helped set up several spinning units.

A city-based investment banker won ₹9 lakh in Wakefit’s sleep internship program.

What’s it about? Saishwari Patil won the “Sleep Champion” title and ₹9 lakh in the third season of Wakefit’s sleep internship program. She was among 12 sleep interns chosen for the program that encourages people to value sleep but struggle to prioritise it.

  • Each intern was given a premium mattress and a contactless sleep tracker to monitor and improve their sleep quality. They attended sleep workshops by experts to enhance their sleep habits.
  • To maintain a good score, there has to be consistency with sleep and wake-up times by cutting down on late-night scrolling through social media and binge-watching.

Study results: The 2024 edition showed that nearly 50% of Indians wake up feeling tired. The common causes are long work hours, stress, lack of physical activity, and poor sleep environments.

🎓 Hiring freshers

A new report stated Bengaluru is expected to lead in the hiring of freshers in 2024.

What’s it about? TeamLease EdTech’s latest Career Outlook Report showed that Bengaluru is expected to lead hiring in 2024. Companies in the e-commerce, tech startups, engineering, and infrastructure sectors will lead the way in increasing their intake from campuses.

  • 74% of employers in the city intend to hire fresh graduates this year. This is the highest compared to cities like Mumbai (60%) and Chennai (54%). The top roles are Digital Sales Associate, Data Engineer, and Full Stack Developer.
  • Employers are looking for fresh talent in technical roles like cybersecurity, cloud computing, and data analytics.

Evolving landscape: The city’s top position in this report is a reflection of the structural shift toward skills that define the future. It shows the pace at which digital and infrastructural transformation has happened in Bengaluru.

🚦 AI to tackle traffic issues

The Bengaluru police plan to use artificial intelligence to tackle traffic violations and improve road safety.

What’s it about? The city’s traffic police will expand their AI-driven system to monitor and catch violators more easily. AI is currently being used to detect seven types of traffic violations across the city.

  • Bengaluru currently has 300 AI-powered cameras at 50 junctions. Through Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology, video feeds are processed from multiple sources. The plan is to expand this capability with the existing infrastructure.
  • The AI system will also use Automatic Traffic Counting and Classification (ATCC) to monitor the types of vehicles at several junctions. The data gathered will help the police manage traffic flow.

Results: So far, the results of using AI systems have been impressive. In 2023, the Bengaluru traffic police booked nearly 9 million cases and collected ₹185.1 crore in fines. Most of these were issued through contactless enforcement.

🚬 Disposing cigarette butts

The BBMP will place separate bins throughout the city to collect cigarette butts.

What’s it about? In November 2022, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) introduced guidelines for the disposal of cigarette butts. However, those haven’t been implemented in Bengaluru yet. The butts have harmful chemicals and enter drains, soil, and groundwater.

  • The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will place separate bins across the city’s hotspots. The butts will be recycled through waste-to-energy or co-processing.
  • The state Tobacco Control Cell is working to get the instructions printed on cigarette packs.

Appeal to companies: The BBMP has blamed manufacturers for the delay in implementation of the CPCB’s guidelines. A September 19 letter asked ITC to undertake a plan for cigarette butt disposal in 2 wards as a trial.
