🔭 Academic and military innovations

The Sci560 exhibition showcases the city’s academic and military innovations.

What’s it about? The Science Gallery Bengaluru (SGB) launched its exhibition season with the Sci560 exhibition that explores the city’s academic and military innovations. It was inaugurated by SN Boseraju, Minister for Science and Technology. He also announced a ₹10 crore contribution from the government toward SGB’s corpus fund.

  • The exhibition showcases several innovations like India’s first aircraft made at HAL, the Bangalore Torpedo, an explosive charge used in World War I and detonation experiments at the Kolar gold fields.
  • Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi spoke to the gathering and advocated for demystifying science and religion. He said superstitions need to be removed to build a scientific society.

Exploration: The exhibition invites people to explore Bengaluru as the country’s most recognised military-industrial-academic complex.


🏢 IIM Bangalore’s new centre

IIM Bangalore will establish a new centre of excellence for private equity and venture capital.

What’s it about? IIM Bangalore will set up the Tony James Centre for Private Equity and Venture Capital. This new centre is the result of an MoU signed by Prof. Dinesh Kumar, Dean Faculty, and Mathew Cyriac, the Executive Chairman of Florintree Advisors Pvt Ltd. Mathew is an alumnus of the 1994 batch.

  • The centre is named after Tony James, a notable person in investment banking. He was the President, COO, and Executive Vice Chairman of Blackstone.
  • Mathew graduated top of his MBA class and has made significant contributions to the institute. It’s the institute’s single largest contribution by an alumnus.

Other contributions: He also set up four new scholarships for IIMB’s PhD and MBA/Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) students. He’ll also facilitate four new classrooms in IIMB’s K Block.


🛣️ Tunnel road approved

The state cabinet approved the city’s first tunnel road project to help alleviate traffic problems.

What’s it about? The ambitious project is expected to cost ₹12,690 crore and was given the green light last Thursday at a cabinet meeting. The project has been in the works for a long time and is seen as a solution for the city’s traffic woes.

  • The first phase will be building a twin-tube 18 km corridor from the Hebbal Flyover to the Central Silk Board Junction. This stretch will have five entry and exit points to enhance connectivity.
  • Tenders for this project will be announced soon. It’s a joint venture between the state government and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

Getting land: The government hopes to execute the project through a public-private partnership (PPP). The development will require land to be acquired from sections of the Turf Club, Golf Course, and Bangalore Palace premises.
