Marina Beach has evolved into a melting pot of flavours, offering something for different palates.

What’s it about? Marina Beach is an important Chennai landmark. What was once a place for simple snacks and flavours has now become one where people have multiple options to choose from. It began in the 1950s and 1960s with local delicacies like spiced chickpeas and fried vegetable fritters.

  • As the city evolved and modernised, so did the food scene. New vendors came in the 1980s and 1990s. Mobile food carts were now a thing that sold traditional snacks, ice creams, and local desserts.
  • The variety on display is a reflection of the city’s changed culinary landscape – a mix of the old and the new. This has also resulted in an increase in tourists and local visitors.

Part of the city: The beach and the delicacies are part and parcel of the city, its legacy, and creating memories. For many, it’s also a taste of nostalgia.

🙋 Special exhibition

Special needs students at Vasantham Home showcased science and health awareness projects.

What’s it about? 200 special needs students showcased their projects at the special school in Mogappair East. The students with special needs like autism and Down’s Syndrome showcased the projects they crafted with help from their teachers.

  • Nandakumar exhibited the workings of the solar system and was assisted by his teacher due to his limited verbal communication. Another student, Gayathri, living with neurological issues, showcased a magnetic device that emitted a sound when metal objects were near.
  • The teachers help students by guiding them and teaching them the concepts using visuals, props, and detailed charts.

Rehabilitation and training: The school helps rehabilitate and hone their skills with some basic training. The role of the therapists at the home is to help them become employable.

🏡 Living project for seniors

Ashiana Housing and Arihant Foundation will invest in a new senior living project on ECR.

What’s it about? New Delhi-based Ashiana Housing and Chennai-based Arihant Foundation will invest ₹225 crore to develop a senior living project called ‘Swarang’ at Nemmeli on East Coast Road (ECR).

  • The project will comprise 451 units spread over 6 lakh square feet. The first phase will have 134 units and be available over the next two years.
  • The project won’t have high-rise buildings. It’ll have 13 blocks with amenities like a care home for senior citizens, a clubhouse, and a temple.

Other details: The project is open to people above 55 years. The age criteria were fixed to keep the project as one dedicated to seniors. Their relatives can stay temporarily.

🛣️ New vending zone

The city will soon have its first model vending zone in North Chennai.

What’s it about? The zone will come up along a 270-metre stretch of North Avenue Road near Captain Cotton Canal in MKB Nagar. The locality will be decongested to make way for 130 stalls, vendors, and small provision stores.

  • The design for the stretch was presented and accepted at a town committee meeting. 96 vendors have already agreed to occupy the space.
  • The vendors will be relocated from nearby streets once existing encroachments are cleared. Currently, vendors have encroached on busy areas of MKB Nagar, where there’s a high risk of accidents.

Some concerns: While the town vending committee accepted the proposal and design, there are concerns about accommodation. Previously, there were 900 vending zones across the city, but now there are 776 for 35,000 vendors. The committee wants the number of zones to be increased.
