Climate Cell applicants
C

Good morning, Bengaluru!

☁️ Today’s weather: High: 29 ℃ | Low: 21 ℃ | Mostly cloudy for today.

🧐 Did you know? The KR Market area was previously a lake – Siddikatte, named after one of Kempe Gowda’s relatives.

♻️ Climate Action Cell applications

The BBMP’s Climate Action Cell (CAC) has received 400 applications for its eight posts.

What’s it about? When the Bengaluru Climate Action Plan (BCAP) was launched last November, Bengaluru became the third Indian city to have a climate action plan under the C40 Cities network. The BBMP’s CAC has received 400 applications for the eight positions under the ‘Fellows of CAC’ program, responsible for executing the BCAP’s plans.

  • The BCAP’s main objective is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help mitigate climate change hazards. The CAC invited applications from talented professionals who are passionate about climate change.
  • The cell is looking to recruit eight candidates for a 12-month tenure with remuneration ranging from ₹40,000-60,000 per month. Some applications will be rejected since a PG diploma in urban planning/management/administration or equivalent discipline is needed.

Selection process: The candidates will take an online exam, followed by a personal interview. The chosen ones will undergo one month of on-the-job training.

🛍️ Underground market

The city will soon have its first underground air-conditioned market.

What’s it about? The Palike Bazaar in Vijayanagar will open by the end of this month. It’s based along the lines of the Palika Bazaar in New Delhi. The new market will be located close to the Vijayanagar metro station.

  • The busy service road was once a bustling market with over 150 fruit, vegetable, and flower vendors. They were cleared to make way for the underground market in 2017.
  • The 100-metre-long market will have over 75 shops on either side of a 3-metre pedestrian passage. The market will have sensor-enabled sliding doors, escalators and lifts. To prevent flooding, there’s a separate pipeline to divert rainwater.

Choosing vendors: Traders and vendors still don’t know if they’ll get a spot in the new market. They’re still waiting for a call from officials on allocations.

🚴 Long-distance cycling

Long-distance cycling has gained popularity among Bengalureans for its health and environmental benefits.

What’s it about? Fuelled by a combination of being health conscious and environmental awareness, city residents have taken up long-distance cycling. It’s an eco-friendly alternative as Bengaluru grapples with pollution and increased traffic congestion.

  • Cycling groups and communities have cropped up around the city, catering to novice and experienced riders. The scenic routes and trails around the city offer an opportunity to connect with nature.
  • As more people realise the benefits of cycling, it’s becoming an integral part of the city’s culture.

Special group: Rajajinagar MLA S Suresh Kumar celebrated 11 years of long-distance cycling with a 285-km journey with his cycling group.

👩‍💻 Boosting PG safety

The city police have expanded the CVRMS to increase the safety of PGs.

What’s it about? The City Visitors Information Records Management System (CVRMS) was introduced last year on a pilot basis and has been successful. The police have now extended that system across the city for PGs.

  • The CVRMS is an application developed by a Maharashtra-based startup. It helps Paying Guest accommodations maintain data about visitors staying for a short time. While PGs don’t need to use the system, it’s recommended.
  • Previously, PGs entered the details manually or used their own software. With the CVRMS, the data is on a centralised server and helps the police in case of any incidents.

Privacy: Once a guest leaves the accommodation, the establishment won’t have their data. The developers of the application also don’t have access to the information. The police can access it but only partially and with permission.
