๐ Recognising women
City-based Brand Avatar recognised women entrepreneurs from across the state.
What’s it about? Women entrepreneurs from across Tamil Nadu submitted their applications for the 7th edition of the Sakthi Masala Homepreneur Awards -Suyasakthi Virudhugal 2024. The award is an initiative by Chennai-based brand management company Brand Avatar.
- The company awarded women in 13 categories, from art and culture to home retail and professional sectors. The nominees gathered at an event at the Savera Hotel to announce the winners.
- Thenmozhi Murugesan, a candidate in the education category, began teaching women and children English through Tamil. N Bharathi, an author recognised by Harvard University, is passionate about Tamil and English writing.
Inspiring stories: The stories of women and their ambitions served as a reminder of their abilities and talents and to not be underestimated.
๐ฉโ๐ณ Learning to cook
Cooking workshops by professional chefs are transforming the city’s culinary landscape.
What’s it about? Chennai’s diverse culinary landscape is expanding thanks to professional chefs pushing the boundaries and offering to pass their cooking knowledge and wisdom. Various cooking classes and workshops have evolved into experiences beyond just recipe-sharing.
- Piyus Arya of Frangipani Culinary Expression was contacted by the Goethe Institut to showcase foods that Franz Kafka enjoyed. According to him, the landscape has evolved. The workshops have become more detailed, and more men have taken an interest.
- Chocolatier Keshav Krishna’s workshops have participants go hands-on in making a variety of chocolates in different shapes and patterns. It’s a way for people to use their imagination and explore their creativity.
Expanded clientele: Workshops usually have home cooks and bakers, but that has changed. IT professionals and corporate employees attend not just to learn a new skill but to unwind and for team building.
๐ Homeless Summit
The Banyan will host a conference on the mental health of homeless people.
What’s it about? The Banyan and The Banyan Academy of Leadership in Mental Health (BALM) will host a dialogue on homeless people and mental health as part of its fourth International Conference.
- The Banyan offers the “Home Again” programme to help people transition to stable living arrangements. While some are reintegrated into their families or interdependent living, others face difficulties.
- The Banyan works with the state government and the National Health Mission to set up Emergency Care and Recovery Centres (ECRCs) for homeless people with mental health conditions.
Topics of discussion: The three-day event will see discussions focus on crisis response, community care, inclusive development and ecosystems for people with long-term care needs.
๐ฃ๏ธ Widening roads
The Chennai Corporation and the CMDA have identified six roads to widen to facilitate a smoother traffic flow.
What’s it about? The identified roads will be widened by 8 to 15 feet to help traffic flow. The selected roads include sections of LB Road, New Avadi Road, Paper Mills Road from Perambur to Kolathur, RK Salai from Marina Beach to Gemini Circle, Cooks Road, and Perambur Barracks Raod from Purasawakkam to Perambur.
- The Chennai Corporation has already begun talking to private property owners for land acquisition. At LB Road, RK Salai, and Perambur Barracks Road, the work will take longer since they need the metro to hand over once their work is complete.
- A consultant has been appointed to survey the width of the existing roads and determine the necessary expansion limits. First up will be RK Salai near the Mylapore junction.
Necessary for the future: The widening of these roads will not only help ensure a smoother flow of traffic, it’ll also help pave the way for four-lane flyovers in the future.
