Thrifting on the rise
T

Good morning, Bengaluru!

⛈️ Today’s weather: Thundershowers and a hot cuppa in the offings.

🧐 Did you know? Pandit Sudhakar Chaturvedi, who passed in 2017, was claimed to be India’s oldest person. Born in Bengaluru, he reportedly lived for 122 years and 313 days.

🛍️ The lure of thrifting

Newcomers to Bengaluru opt for second-hand goods and thrifted clothing over brand-new items.

All aboard: When Abinaya Kalyanasundaram, a freelance journalist, moved to Bengaluru, she had a limited budget. Within a month, she furnished her 2BHK apartment for just ₹22,000. Abhinaya and several others who move to the city prefer to spend on second-hand goods.

  • The emergence of online platforms like OLX, Quikr, and Facebook Marketplace has made it easier for residents to buy a wide variety of secondhand goods.
  • Offline avenues like flea markets and thrift stores are also gaining popularity, reflecting the growing trend of sustainable and secondhand shopping in the city.

Sustainability: Thrifting has become popular among the younger generation, who see it as an affordable and sustainable alternative to fast fashion. Influencers and celebrities have also embraced the trend, promoting its unique and personal style.

  • This shift towards a thrift culture aligns with the goals of waste management companies and upcycling initiatives, which aim to create a circular economy and reduce waste generation.
