🫀 CPR demonstration before IPL
A CPR demonstration by Manipal Hospital highlighted the importance of prompt responses in medical emergencies.
Story so far: On April 23, Manipal Hospital organised a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) demonstration at M Chinnaswamy stadium before the Indian Premier League (IPL) T20 match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Rajasthan Royals.
- Doctors from the hospital invited around 20 transplant recipients and donors to cheer for RCB.
Why it matters? The CPR demonstration aimed at emphasising the importance of prompt action during a heart emergency. The doctors showed how having CPR training can help the average person save lives.
🚑 Rotary donations
Bengaluru’s Rotary Club donated ambulances for the well-being of thousands of people.
Story so far: On Monday, the Rotary Club of Bangalore held its 41st weekly meeting at the Rotary House of Friendship at Lavelle Road. The Rotary donated three ambulances and hosted the finale of the club’s inter-collegiate debate contest.
- Ambulances were sent to the Nightingales Centre for the Elderly, the Home of Hope shelter for the homeless, and Victoria Hospital burns ward.
- They were Maruti Eeco ambulances equipped with advanced hospital kits.
Why it matters? The Rotary’s donation will help around 5,000 people annually. The club also inaugurated dialysis machines in two public hospitals.
🏃 Sanya Richards-Ross becomes Bengaluru’s ambassador
Former Olympic champion, Sanya Richards-Ross, will be the International Event Ambassador for Bengaluru’s road race.
Story so far: The 15th chapter of the World 10K Bengaluru, an annual 10 kilometres road running competition, will have former Olympic and world champion in 400 metres Sanya Richards-Ross as its International Event Ambassador.
- The athlete was chosen for her tenacity, discipline, and commitment. She was a crowd favourite at the Olympics, and her presence is expected to inspire runners.
- The event will have top runners from across the globe, along with amateurs.
Lessons from Richards: Apart from expressing thrill at the prospect of being an event ambassador, Richards-Ross had advice for athletes. Slow and steady is the name of the game, she said. Setting goals and nurturing them will help athletes in the long haul, as it did with her.
🎦 Have you heard of the fruit man?
A city-based filmmaker has unravelled the life of HC Javaraya, an Indian horticulturist who contributed significantly to Bengaluru.
Story so far: While many Bengalureans are aware of German horticulturist Gustav Hermann Krumbiegel’s contribution to the city’s landscape, very few know of his successor, HC Javaraya’s contributions. Ganesh Shankar Raj, a city-based filmmaker, has directed a documentary about the horticulturist’s life.
- Javaraya set up the Fruit Research Centre in 1938, which is now the Indian Institute of Horticulture and Research (IIHR).
- He came up with the AGMARK sign for fruits. Unsurprisingly, he was called the ‘fruit man’ of the Mysuru state.
The documentary: Shakar Raj’s documentary is based on the book ‘Bahadur HC Javaraya: A Gardener and a Gentleman’ by Meera Iyer, a writer, researcher and convenor of INTACH. The director admits to having a soft spot for the stalwarts of horticulture.
