St Broseph, the saviour
S

Good morning, Bengaluru!

⛈️ Today’s weather: Light rain showers and a gentle breeze.

🧐 Did you know? There have been many ships named after Bangalore. The first one, perhaps, was built in 1792 in Calcutta. It took on the British registry after travelling from Bengal to London for the British East India Company. It was wrecked at sea in 1802.

⚛️ Spearheading the National Quantum Mission

RRI and IISc are among the four institutions leading the way for India to adopt quantum technologies.

Story so far: Merely a week after the Union government greenlit the National Quantum Mission (NCM), field experts met at the Raman Research Institute (RRI) to break down the course the NQM intends to take. Four institutes will drive this mission – RRI and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru, the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in Mumbai, and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) in Pune.

  • India will move toward quantum technology in a phased manner. The institutions mentioned above will provide domain expertise to do so.
  • The government will invite proposals from them to set up thematic hubs on four verticals of the NCM: Quantum Computing, Quantum Communications, Quantum Sensing and Metrology, and Quantum Materials and Devices.

Why it matters? Quantum technology works by the principles of quantum mechanics. It has applications across the board and is expected to transform the way people communicate.

🚰 Disrupted water supply

Parts of North and East Bengaluru are suffering from erratic water supply.

Story so far: The swelling demand for water during the early throes of the summer has taken its toll on some parts of the city. Water supply remains disrupted in a few areas in East and North Bengaluru.

  • Supply has been severely erratic in OMBR Layout in Banaswadi for a month. Where the residents received water thrice a week, they now get it after longer intervals and for a minimal amount of time.

What’s the reason? A senior Bangalore Water Supply and Sewage Board (BWSSB) official denied any water scarcity peril. According to him, the increased demand has accelerated the frequency of technical snags and power disruptions.

St Broseph is a charitable person who helps Bengalureans deal with any issue under the sun.

Story so far: If Bengaluru were Gotham, Dushyant Dubey, a marketing manager and social worker, would be its Batman. Popularly known by his Reddit handle St Broseph, he has been engaged in social welfare for a long time.

  • Dubey’s social work in Bengaluru officially began last year when he made a post on the Bengaluru subreddit, offering his services to anyone in distress or shifty situations.
  • Through Reddit, he has helped people with issues related to landlords, rowdyism, assault, stalking, getting an FIR registered, and problems with the police.

How did it start? Dubey cites his father as an inspiration who actively practised charity in his lifetime. His journey began by volunteering for animal shelters in his native Gujarat. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit Bengaluru, he volunteered with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and helped source beds for the needy.

🍕 UK’s PizzaExpress in Bengaluru

The first PizzaExpress restaurant in Bengaluru has just opened in Koramangala.

Story so far: United Kingdom’s (UK) legacy pizza chain that set up shop in 1965 in Wardour Street, London, has come to Bengaluru through Gourmet Investments Private Limited, the Bharti Family Office’s food and beverage venture.

  • Their Koramangala menu features rectangular-shaped Calabrese pizza, a hot favourite in the UK, with Calabrese and n’duja sausage. They have Indian flavours too, like chicken coriander pesto pizza and tandoori chicken pizza.
  • A dessert worth trying is the raspberry cheesecake served with raspberry coulis.

The brand: PizzaExpress made its Indian voyage in 2012, with an outlet in Mumbai. The pizza chain has over 400 restaurants world-over.
