Repairing bicycles for free
R

Good morning, Bengaluru!

Today’s weather: Partly cloudy with slight humidity.

🧐 Did you know? Before Indian Independence, the Lalbagh Botanical Garden was designed and built during Hyder Ali’s dalavaiship and was later on maintained by various British Superintendents. It was home to numerous ornamental as well as commercial plants. In addition to being a park and recreational area, it also functioned as a social gathering place. It houses a central glass house built in 1890 that is used for flower shows.

🚴‍♂️ Bicycle repair kiosks coming up soon

Since a trial project for a self-help bicycle repair kiosk near the Dr BR Ambedkar Metro Station was set up in December 2021, cyclists in Bengaluru have been hoping for more such kiosks to be installed in the city.

What’s it about? A free service offered by the DULT (Directorate of Urban Land Transport) called Pedal Port allows cyclists to make quick fixes to their bikes if they break down mid-travel. The production of 12 pedal ports is almost finished, according to DULT commissioner V Manjula, and they will be positioned close to metro stations before work on the next phase gets underway.

  • To adjust loose joints and fill flat tyres, a pedal port has a lot of tools, including allen keys, screwdrivers, and spanners of various sizes. Additionally, cyclists can place their bicycles on top of the port while mending them.

Reasons for delay: Manjula explained the delay by stating that the pedal port at the Ambedkar metro station has been under review for improvements the entire time. Central Manufacturing Technology Institute (CMTI) has offered to sponsor roughly eight pedal ports and enhance the design at DULT’s request.

To show their appreciation for the traffic police, fifty school students gathered on Tuesday at the Traffic Police Park. The event was organised by the Children’s Movement for Civic Awareness (CMCA) and was titled Celebrating Namma Bengaluru’s Traffic Police.

What’s it about? The students gave away flowers, poems, and thank you cards to the personnel of traffic police and expressed their gratitude for their services. The students said that they were very happy that they were attending such an event. They also said that this event is as significant as teacher’s day.

  • The event marks the end of a three-month campaign by the CMCA to recognise traffic cops and educate pupils about traffic laws.
  • Dr MA Saleem, Special Commissioner of Traffic Police, praised the pupils and added that their appreciation of the traffic police’s efforts would improve their morale and efficiency.

🏗 Construction of metro pillars stopped

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has modified its standard operating procedure for casting the reinforcement cage in response to a report on the reinforcement cage collapse that occurred on January 10 that was submitted by Professor Chandra Kishen of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).

What’s it about? According to Prof. Kishen, whose 27-page study was submitted to BMRCL, the 18-metre building that killed a mother and her kid recently was a mixture of two constructions that were stacked on top of one another. The whole 18-metre reinforcement structure fell because of bending caused by the overlapping structure and improperly built supporting components for the reinforcement cage.

  • According to the IISc study, he said, modifications to the normal operating procedures for erecting the pillars will be implemented, including moving to two-stage casting and concretising the structure as soon as possible, among other things.

The case: The state government and BMRCL have been given two weeks to answer to the suo motu PIL the Karnataka High Court took up on Tuesday about the pillar fall on January 10 that claimed the lives of a young mother and her two-year-old son. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, BMRCL, and contractor Nagarjuna Construction Company received notices from the High Court.

🐟 Fish canteens to be opened in Bengaluru

The Department of Fisheries will open fish canteens at 100 locations around Bengaluru. At these canteens, a whole fish supper would run you about ₹100. And there’s more. Twenty-four different fish dishes, including soup, fish curry, rice, and pickle appetisers, will be available to customers.

What’s it about? S Angara, the minister of fisheries, announced that the government intended to open a canteen in each Bengaluru ward. They are launching the canteens in 100 locations across the city, to begin with. Stores will be established where meals will be made accessible in addition to putting fish on sale in partnership with Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

  • In addition to Cubbon Park in Bengaluru, the department also manages Mathsya Darshini eateries in Ballari, Shivamogga, and Mangaluru. Currently, a whole fish supper costs ₹130 at the Cubbon Park canteen.

Why Bengaluru? According to the minister, a city like Bengaluru has been picked since it houses a large number of people consuming seafood. Angara stated that a centralised kitchen would be established to distribute food to these canteens in order to maintain the consistency of flavour and cost of these meals at all locations. The cost of the meals is yet to be set by the state government.

  • The department is also trying to create jobs for young people through this project.
  • The plan will also benefit fishermen since there will be more demand for fish if more people start eating it.
