The High Court of Karnataka has prohibited Bangalore Turf Club (BTC) Limited from conducting both on-course and off-course racing and betting events.

What’s it about? This decision follows an appeal by the state government against a previous order that allowed BTC to continue its operations. A division bench, comprising Chief Justice NV Anjaria and Justice KV Aravind, upheld the state government’s decision to reject BTC’s application for a license to conduct racing and betting events.

  • The interim order issued on June 18 by a single judge, which permitted BTC to conduct these events, is now suspended.
  • The government’s refusal of the license, issued on June 6, was based on several alleged irregularities within the club.

Prima facie: The court observed that the state’s discretion to deny the license appeared to be exercised reasonably and based on relevant factors. As such, the bench concluded that there was no prima facie case for BTC to seek interim relief granted by the single judge.

🍴 Fined for serving cold food

A restaurant near a National Highway in the Bengaluru Urban district has been fined for serving cold and unhygienic food to a customer.

What’s it about? The complainant, Tahara, a 56-year-old resident of Koramangala, reported that she was travelling to Hassan for a family trip on July 30, 2022, when she stopped at the restaurant for breakfast.

  • She stated that the food served was cold and not fresh. When she requested a hot meal, the staff rudely informed her that it could not be provided.
  • The First Additional District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission ordered the Udupi Garden restaurant to pay a fine of ₹7,000.

Medical complications: Tahara, who has high blood pressure, alleged that she was unable to take her medication because she couldn’t eat the cold food. The commission, presided over by B Narayanapappa, fined the restaurant ₹5,000 for deficiency in service and an additional ₹2,000 to cover litigation expenses.
