Queer film festival
Q

Good morning, Bengaluru!

🌥️ Today’s weather: Cloudy and breezy.

🧐 Did you know? In 2021, The New York Times Style Magazine ranked the IIM Bangalore campus among the 25 most significant works of post-war architecture.

📽️ Queer film festival

Over a thousand people a day are expected at Bengaluru’s homegrown queer film festival.

Story so far: For the past 14 years, the Bangalore Queer Film Festival (BQFF) has painted the city’s cultural landscape with dynamism. Since its inception in 2010, the festival has flourished. Now, it is poised to premiere its 13th edition on August 4th, 5th, and 6th.

  • This year’s highlights include The Quiet Solace of Sunset from Tibet and Two Souls from Myanmar.
  • Other films to be screened include Closeting from Indonesia and Bad Behaviour from Bengaluru.

Details: The festival will open at the Alliance Française de Bangalore in Vasanth Nagar on August 4. The Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan in Indiranagar will play host for the remaining two days.

💻 AMD campus

US-based semiconductor firm AMD will open a Bengaluru campus by the end of 2023.

Story so far: In a bid to rival AI chip leader Nvidia, AMD has announced its ambitious plan to invest approximately $400 million in India over the next five years. Some of this investment will go into building a cutting-edge campus in Bengaluru, which will be the company’s largest design centre across the globe.

  • The AMD campus is expected to inaugurate before the end of this year. It will boast state-of-the-art facilities, ample lab space, and collaborative tools, all carefully designed to nurture teamwork and drive innovation.
  • As a result of this investment, AMD will generate around 3,000 new engineering roles by the end of 2028.

The journey: AMD’s new Bengaluru campus will increase its office presence to 10 locations, complementing sites in Delhi, Gurugram, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. From a small team in 2001 to over 6,500 employees now, AMD’s India growth reflects solid local leadership and a skilled talent pool.

🚇 Metro corridor in E-city

The initial prototypes arriving from China spur optimism about the Yellow Line’s timely completion.

Story so far: Umesh Chowdhary, the MD and CEO of Titagarh Rail Systems, informs that the initial two six-car prototype metro trains destined for Bengaluru’s Electronic City Metro corridor are expected to arrive from China by September 2023.

  • The remaining 204 coaches will be manufactured in India by Titagarh Rail. The complete set of 216 coaches for the BMRCL is scheduled for delivery by March 2025.
  • To ensure timely completion, Titagarh will build two trains, or 12 cars, per month. Unlike previous coaches, these will be made from stainless steel.

Will they, or won’t they? BMRCL officials hope to meet the December 2023 deadline for the Yellow Line, despite concerns about possible delays in commercial operations. Initial testing and trial runs will commence as soon as the first two trains arrive, but at least 8-10 trains are needed to begin operations.

  • Delays in rolling stock supply and procedures may push commercial operations to the first quarter of 2024.
