🌊 Flood-prone city

A recent geospatial study has revealed that 85% of Bengaluru is vulnerable to flooding.

What’s it about? The study found that 30% of the city faces a high risk of flooding, 57% is under moderate flood risk, and only 13% is under low flood risk. The researchers attribute the high flood vulnerability primarily to changes in land use, including rapid urbanisation and unplanned expansion, which have resulted in many permeable surfaces being converted to impermeable ones.

  • The city’s transformation has led to low infiltration rates of rainwater, making even short periods of rainfall result in significant flooding, particularly in low-lying areas.
  • Over 635 sq km of Bengaluru urban district is prone to high flood hazard, with built-up areas and agricultural lands being the most affected.

Perils of urbanisations:  The study, which was published in the Journal of Landscape Ecology, also highlighted the urbanisation-induced loss of green cover as a significant factor contributing to flooding events.
