Pink Bengaluru
P

Good morning, Bengaluru!

☀️ Today’s weather: A sunny and breezy day.

🧐 Did you know? The Bangalore Gayana Samaja, established in 1905, is one of the city’s oldest cultural organisations and the oldest running sabha in the country. Initially, it operated out of a rented building in Chamarajapete.

🌸 Spring in a film

A new video capturing the Tabebuia flowering trees has enraptured netizens.

Story so far: Tabebuia rosea flowers are ruling over the garden city this spring. A video by photographer Raj Mohan showing an aerial view of the city decked by the neotropical pink flowers has taken Twitter by storm.

  • The video captures different shades of the Tabebuia rosea. It shows a train passing past the trees and a waterbody complementing the view.
  • At the beginning of 2022, pictures and reels capturing the blooming tabebuia rosea and pink trumpets went viral on social media. So did reels about Bengalureans’ excitement for the flowers.

Why it matters? The pink trees in Bengaluru are often confused with Japan’s cherry blossoms. The triad that dominates the city’s pink landscape comprises Tabebuia avellanedae, rosea, and argentea, all part of the Tabebuia family.

⚛️ Energy research partnerships

The IISc and PFC have partnered to advance research in green energy and net zero technologies.

Story so far: On March 21, Power Finance Corporation Limited (PFC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) to construct a new energy research building to house the Interdisciplinary Centre for Energy Research (ICER) on IISc’s premises.

  • ICER’s avant-garde building will enable pioneering fundamental and applied research on energy. It will prioritise green hydrogen generation. Labs, seminar rooms, classrooms and prototype-developing facilities will inhabit the building.
  • ICER will increase capacity building through PhD and Master’s programmes. It will organise programmes between academic and industry fellows.

Why it matters? ICER, conceived in 2012, collaborates with several domestic and foreign organisations. Its research on green hydrogen generation has reached the stage of real-world demonstration.

  • It has established India’s first supercritical CO2 Brayton cycle. It will help generate clean energy from power plants.

The government is organising a fest celebrating Bengaluru’s cultural triumphs this weekend.

Story so far: The Karnataka state government is organising Bengaluru Habba, an annual cultural festival from March 25 to 26. The festival is meant to be a carnival of the city’s culture and tradition. It expects to attract a thousand participants.

  • It will be held at Cubbon Park and around the Vidhana Soudha. Artists from across the state will display their talent at the festival.
  • The habba will be a cosy event this year. Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai will set it rolling. The Union Home Minister Amit Shah will be present on Sunday.

Tell me more? The festival is also a tribute to Nadaprabhu Kempe Gowda, the chieftain who played an essential role in developing Bengaluru. Reports from last month suggested that the Kempe Gowda and Basavanna statues are to be inaugurated too.

On Tuesday, an educational academy for differently-abled people arranged an exhibition and sale.

  • One of the most popular items was an inclusivity calendar designed by NIFT Chennai and Happiness is Khushi.

Tell me more? Riza Reji sold paneer rolls. An aspiring model, she has appeared in a Tanishq commercial and works at Beautiful Minds Astitva. Samia Khimji, another model and accomplished painter, participated too.
