Good morning, Bengaluru!
☀️ Today’s weather: Sunny and breezy.
🧐 Did you know? Shivaji Military Hotel in Jayanagar is believed to be the first of many military hotels in the city. One origin theory is that after they conquered Bengaluru in 1638, the Maratha descendants of Shahaji Bhonsle started running these restaurants.
🧠 New neurosurvey and teleneurology units

Two important neurology initiatives aim to curtail neurological disorders’ prevalence.
Story so far: The Karnataka Brain Health Initiative (KaBHI), NIMHANS, and the Department of Health launched the Neuro Epidemiological Study In Gowribidanur – II (NEPSIG) survey at Gowribidanur, and teleneurology services at Chikkaballapur. The two initiatives aim to improve services for neurological disorders.
- The teleneurology initiative will increase the community’s access to neurological assistance. It will extend to the rest of Karnataka within three months.
- The NEPSIG-II survey will chart the prevalence and distribution of neurological disorders and how they have changed in the past three decades.
Why it matters? Neurological disorders like strokes, dementia, and epilepsy are the second largest contributors to disability and death in India. The country’s burden of communicable and non-communicable neurological problems doubled between 1990 and 2019.
- Experts believe that early detection, accessible treatment, and prevention through lifestyle changes and better living environments can lower their prevalence effectively.
🛻 South Indian food truck

Four Bengaluru-based professionals open a thriving late-night food truck.
Story so far: In December 2022, four friends embarked on a food truck venture and launched KA05 Kitchen in JP Nagar to provide good quality, hot south Indian food. Located at a prime spot with a high footfall, its customers are primarily late-night party-goers, working professionals, and gig workers.
- The food truck operates at night between 9 pm and 2 am so its owners can pursue regular jobs during the day.
- The food entrepreneurs plan to increase the truck’s availability further into the early morning hours. One of the owners plans to open a restaurant eventually.
Origin story: It all began with two friends wandering through the city late at night. Through these rovings, they realised the dearth of late-night, good-quality south Indian food in the city. After bringing two other friends into their fold, the group turned their gastronomic complaints into a side hustle.
🚌 Accessible bus stop for seniors

Raghavanapalya residents urge the BMTC to make buses accessible for senior citizens.
Story so far: Residents in JP Nagar 9th Phase’s Raghavanapalya petitioned the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) to redirect buses by one kilometre to make public transport more accessible to senior citizens in the area. The BMTC will take action after a survey.
- The petition was signed by 138 residents and dropped off at the BMTC head office on March 2.
- They argued that several residential apartments like Nandi Gardens, IMG Elite, and Aryahamsa housed senior citizens. For them, the existing bus stops are not within walking distance.
Why it matters? Senior citizens depend on public transportation for their travel requirements, either due to a lack of private vehicles or health-related limitations. In the absence of reachable bus stops, the ageing population is compelled to avail of expensive and unreliable autorickshaws and taxis.
🖋️ Calligraphy exhibition

IIIAC organises a calligraphy exhibition to promote the works of different artists.
Story so far: The Institute of Indo-Islamic Art and Culture (IIIAC) organised a three-day calligraphy exhibition for art enthusiasts in the city. The Multilingual Calligraphy Exhibition displayed the skills of several renowned calligraphers and calligraphy experts from India and beyond.
- There were workshops to explore the Khatt Diwani and Khatt Tulut scripts. Practitioners and experts from Sudan, Turkey, Iran, Japan, and other countries joined vernacular experts for panel discussions at the event.
- The panellists discussed calligraphy ethics and aesthetics, the transformation of calligraphy practices in India, and the prominence of calligraphy in West Asia.
Why it matters? Muqtar Ahmed, a calligrapher and the founder of IIIAC, revealed that the exhibition forged an assembly of calligraphers from different regions. The objective was to promote their work, facilitate interaction, and churn out a discussion on the art and practice of calligraphy.

Answers to Yesterday’s Question:
What are some ways you destress after a hectic week?
A concerned citizen: “I go for a walk at Puttenahalli Lake; it’s a beautiful place for Bird Watching & enjoying a peaceful sunset. But I would like to share an incident that happened to me recently while walking back from Puttenahalli lake. I have seen a lot of men peeing facing the lake, but this time when this one guy saw me, he pulled out his penis from his zipper and walked toward me. I was flashed and completely horrified at what I had seen. Absolutely disgusting, I don’t know what you guys can do, but I don’t want any other girl to go through this. I want to feel safe, at least when I’m hardly 100 meters away from my home. The lake is already polluted, and there is always one or the other guy peeing in that lane. There can be better measures taken to keep the place clean and safe from perverts.”
That’s it for today. Have a great day!
