🥇 Aeromodelling winners

Bhopal’s Arshad Khan won the 2023 Boeing National Aeromodelling Competition in Bengaluru.

Story so far: On May 3, Boeing announced the winners of India’s 8th annual Boeing National Aeromodelling Competition. The finale, organised at RV College of Engineering in Bengaluru, had 39 finalists from 12 teams. Rabindranath Tagore University’s Arshad Khan prevailed over everyone as the winner.

  • Sharanya Acharya Nishmithe, Aman Kumar Srivastav, and Gagan G Nayak from Nitte Mahalinga Adyanthaya Memorial Institute of Technology, Nitte bagged the second spot. Students of the same institute secured the third spot.
  • The zonal rounds were organised at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Bombay, Kanpur, Kharagpur, and Chennai.

Why it matters? The competition witnessed doubled participation than last year, with almost 2,200 students. It began in 2013 to offer a national platform for students interested in aerospace engineering.


👯 Uppercut theatre packs a punch

A Danish dance company will organise a workshop in Bengaluru as part of its India tour.

Story so far: Uppercut Dance Theater, from Copenhagen, Denmark, will organise a contemporary dance workshop at the Shoonya – Centre for Art and Somatic Practices, Lal Bagh Main Road, on May 5.

  • The dance company is looking for a fifth dancer to join the cast of BENCHED, a visual dance performance set to play in Copenhagen, Turkey, and Canada.
  • They have convened with the Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of Denmark in India for a collaboration to commemorate 75 years of India and Denmark’s diplomatic relations.

Tell me more? Uppercut is a dance company with a twist. They fuse genres like Capoeira, break dance, hip hop, and classical ballet to form dance theatre. Founded in 1982, it’s the first time the company is touring India.


🔍 Metro accident inquiry

The CMRS is conducting an inquiry into the four-month-old metro accident on May 3 and 4.

Story so far: On Tuesday, the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) announced plans for a statutory inquiry into the fatal accident at Bengaluru’s HBR Layout – almost four months after it occurred.

  • It is ongoing at the Cauvery Meeting Hall in the BMRTCL Annex-1 Building in Shanthinagar from 10 am.
  • Anyone with relevant information about the incident can submit evidence during the inquiry. Other options include e-mailing CMRS at [email protected] or calling 080-22260650.

Tell me more? Earlier, the Indian Institute of Science had concluded that flawed supporting mechanisms and a weak reinforcement cage were the primary causes.


✈️ Evacuees from Sudan come home

The fifth batch of Operation Kaveri brings home 26 Karnataka evacuees.

Story so far: On Monday, 26 evacuees hailing from Karnataka arrived in Kochi from violence-struck Sudan, as part of the centre’s rescue mission, Operation Kaveri. This makes a total of 281 Karnataka evacuees from Sudan to have returned to India.

  • On April 27, the first batch of five Karnataka evacuees arrived in Mumbai on April 27. They were succeeded by 122 evacuees landing in Bengaluru on April 28.
  • Amongst the Kochi batch, 19 evacuees belonged to Mysuru, five to Dakshina Kannada, and two to Bengaluru.

Bigger picture: Operation Kaveri’s fifth batch included a total of 184 evacuees. Approximately, there were 148 men and 36 women on board.
