✈️ HAL airport revamp
HAL Airport, the city’s primary air traffic hub until 2008, is set for a major revamp to reintroduce civilian operations.
What’s it about? The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has approved a master plan to modernise the facility and accommodate up to 40 lakh passengers annually by 2047, meeting the demands of the city’s rapid growth.
- Only since 2008 has the Kempegowda International Airport in Devanahalli served as Bengaluru’s primary airport.
- Currently, HAL Airport handles about 12 small aircraft daily, including those used by defence forces, VIPs, and private entities.
Timeline: While the airport’s runway will remain unchanged, the HAL Airport is slated to reopen for civilian operations after the exclusivity agreement with Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) expires on May 24, 2033. This agreement currently prevents the operation of another airport within a 150-km radius.
🚗 Nissan expands
Nissan Motor India has expanded its network in Bengaluru with a new service workshop in Yeshwanthpur, launched in collaboration with Jubilant Nissan.
What’s it about? The workshop spans 22,000 sq. ft., with 10,000 sq. ft. of covered space, and is designed to meet a wide range of service needs with modern amenities and a team of trained professionals.
- The Yeshwanthpur workshop will serve over 16,000 Nissan customers offering a convenient, one-stop solution for all service requirements.
- In Bengaluru, Nissan now operates nine customer touchpoints, including five showrooms and four service workshops.
Karnataka coverage: Across Karnataka, the company has established 19 touchpoints, comprising 10 showrooms and nine service workshops, providing extensive access to its products and services statewide.
🚥 Fine collection
The Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) collected ₹66.46 lakh in fines during a week-long enforcement drive conducted between November 17 and 23.
What’s it about? The crackdown targeted various traffic violations across the city, resolving 9,912 cases, including 5,929 violations detected during the drive and 3,983 pending cases. Key infractions included wrong-route driving, riding without helmets, pillion riders without helmets, overspeeding, and failure to carry proper documents.
- On November 23 alone, the BTP registered 626 violations such as driving against one-way traffic, wrong parking, parking on footpaths, riding on footpaths, and triple riding.
- Fines collected on November 23 amounted to ₹3.13 lakh.
Objectives: The enforcement drives, held daily from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., were part of the BTP’s efforts to enhance road safety and curb violations in the city. These operations also aim to reduce accidents and improve compliance with traffic regulations.
🌧️ Cyclonic rainfall
Bengaluru is set for cooler weather and occasional rainfall as the city experiences the early onset of winter and the effects of Cyclone Fengal’s depression in Tamil Nadu.
What’s it about? Cyclone Fengal, originating off Sri Lanka’s coast, has moved toward Tamil Nadu but continues to influence weather in nearby regions, including Bengaluru. Although the depression is not expected to escalate into a cyclone, it could still cause significant rainfall.
- IMD predicts cloudy skies and intermittent rain for Bengaluru in the coming days, particularly on November 30 and December 1, with the surrounding southern districts likely to experience heavier showers and gusty winds.
- The southern coastal belt of Karnataka is expected to see the most significant impact, while northern regions may also witness occasional rain.
Not in line of impact: While Bengaluru itself may avoid the worst of Cyclone Fengal, moisture-laden winds and low-pressure systems associated with the weather event are expected to bring moderate to heavy rainfall, coupled with cooler temperatures.
