✍️ Nurturing young Kannada litterateurs
The Christ University Kannada Sangha (CUKS) is broadening its reach to foster Kannada literature.
What’s it about? Cultural institutions play fertiliser to a rich tradition of language and literature. They provide a nurturing platform for ideas and artistic expression, especially for the youth. For the past 50 years, the Kannada Sangha has been doing just that. Born out of the need to unite the state and amplify the new generation’s voice, CUKS was spearheaded by the late Professor Chi Srinivasaraju.
- CUKS has published 256 books across genres. Its poetry and essay competitions have given many prolific Kannada writers their first break.
- Each year, 20 student entries are carefully chosen and published as a book, to be unveiled on January 31.
Outreach: This year, the Sangha launched a public lecture series, inviting experts from diverse fields like linguistics, criticism, translation, and philosophy to broaden its reach. The Sangha has successfully promoted Kannada through a Wikipedia writing initiative. Students create Wikipedia entries in Kannada for topics related to their respective streams.
- It resulted in the addition of 2,000 Kannada articles to the online encyclopedia.
🧢 Street dancers face off
India’s diverse street dancing community shines at a Red Bull-sponsored international dance competition.
What’s shaking? Red Bull Dance Your Style India 2023 South Zone Final began with a face-off between Bengaluru’s Divya Easwaran, an Afro dancer, and Coimbatore’s Nivesh Kannan, a hip-hop dancer. As the clock struck 6 pm at Fandom in Gilly’s Redefined, the beats of Dhee and Arivu’s ‘Enjoy Enjaami’ engulfed the air as Divya displayed her artistic prowess.
- While Divya’s performance was fluid and effortless, Nivesh was sharp and precise. The latter blended hip-hop with street dance flavours.
- A dancer from each of the four regional zones will compete in the Red Bull Dance Your Style 2023 India Finals. The winner will represent India at the World Final in Germany.
Inclusive community: In India’s street dancing community, diversity reigns supreme, with individuals encouraged to express their unique styles and perspectives. Varsha Amarnath, a hip-hop dancer, emphasised the absence of gender bias, highlighting the unwavering support and empowerment she received from her male counterparts.

🐕 The benefits of community dogs
Gated residential societies in Bengaluru have found faithful protectors in vaccinated and neutered street dogs.
Story so far: Meesho, Mojo, Swiggy, Dunzo, Zepto, Charlie, Bella, Yulu, and Zeta are some of the furry friends who reside in SJR Waters, a bustling residential community in Haralur. The 300 families who inhabit the apartment complex have adopted nine street dogs as their community animals.
- Fifteen residents have taken it upon themselves to ensure the well-being of these adorable canines, organising funds for their food and medical needs.
- The initiative also involves neutering and vaccinating the street dogs in the vicinity. Presently, no unneutered strays are within a one-kilometre radius of the apartment.
Other tails: When the Metropole Apartment complex in Indiranagar had to let go of its security guards due to financial constraints, four street dogs came to the rescue. Vaccinated and neutered, they have been acting as guards for two years. A similar story unfolded in Salarpuria Sattva Greenage in Bommanahalli, where residents have a community dog for safety.
- Residents feed the dog home-cooked meals. They believe having a dog has helped keep the pest and rodent population in check.
