3D-printed building

Good morning, Bengaluru!

Today’s weather: Hazy sunshine and some breeze.

🧐 Did you know? The Balabrooie guest house was built in the 1850s by Wesleyan missionary John Garrett. It derives its moniker from the Manx words ‘balley’, which means farmstead or home, and ‘brooie’, which means by the river.

🏆 IISc bags ‘Mimamsa 2023’ award

Bengaluru’s IISc won a prestigious national-level award for its prowess in the fundamentals of science.

Story so far: The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore has won the Praj-IISER Pune ‘Mimamsa 2023’ – a coveted National Level award for Science. Four teams made it to finals, including IISc Bangalore, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, and IIT Madras.

  • Around 4,800 students from 450 colleges in India participated in the Pune-based competition. The participation of ‘All Girls teams’ witnessed a 66% uptick from last year.
  • Dr Pramod Chaudhari, Founder and Executive Chairman of Praj Industries, presented the award to IISc Bangalore at the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research’s (IISER) CV Raman Auditorium.

About the award: The Mimamsa competition is an effort to redraw the focus on the fundamentals of science. Such a focus is necessary for innovation and research, said Chaudhari. Over the past three years, Mimamsa grew by 375% in student participation and 312% in institute participation.

🏫 Pioneering drone education

A drone startup has partnered with SJC Institute of Technology to lead drone education in India.

Story so far: Aereo, formerly called Aarav Unmanned Systems, a drone technology startup, has partnered with Sri Jagadguru Chandrashekaranatha Swamiji Institute of Technology to open a centre of excellence in Chickballapur.

  • Here, students will learn the fundamentals of drones, drone mapping, GIS, and data processing. They will also undertake a certified remote pilot training course.
  • It will be a first-of-its-kind institution dedicated to holistic drone education and fundamental remote pilot training. The centre of excellence will expose students to India’s booming drone industry.

Tell me more? The founders expect the institution to set the stage for drone education in India. It will solve an important problem ailing the Indian drone industry – the lack of a high-skilled workforce.

🏤 3D-printed post-office

Bengaluru will get a first-of-its-kind 3D-printed post office building.

Story so far: An upcoming post office in Halasuru is breaking construction conventions by using 3D printing technology. The project, undertaken by Larsen & Toubro (L&T), is expected to be completed within 45 days.

  • Instead of humans manually assembling and layering brick and mortar, specialised 3D printers create precise, layer-by-layer construction of the building.
  • It’s a first-of-its-kind construction in India with a limited requirement of cement heaps and a construction crew.

Why it matters? In the housing and construction sector, 3D printing can be used to build various structures like villas, military barracks, single-floor schools, post offices, and factories. Its lifespan and cost are comparable to conventional buildings.

🐟 Fishy incidents

Lower dissolved oxygen levels and civic inaction are causing fish deaths in the city’s lakes.

Story so far: At least four fish deaths in lakes have been reported in the past four months in Bengaluru. Activists argue that dissolved oxygen depletion and the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board’s (BWSSB) inaction are to blame.

  • Earlier, the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) categorised the Seetharam Palya Lake in Hoodi in the ‘E category’. It meant that the lake wasn’t fit for flora and fauna life.
  • If the BWSSB had prevented raw sewage from entering the lake, it would’ve stopped the mass deaths of small fish.

Action or inaction? A KSPCB team has already inspected the lake for sewage dumping and pollution. If it is indeed as activists believe, the BWSSB will be held accountable. The BWSSB’s Waste Water Division passed the buck onto the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), who accused the Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA).
