đŁď¸ Double-decker flyoverâs testing
Bengaluru is set to open its first double-decker flyover, which will serve both vehicles and the metro.
What’s it about? Bengaluru is poised to unveil its first double-decker flyover, spanning 3.3 km from Ragigudda to Central Silk Board (CSB) along the Yellow Line (RV Road â Bommasandra). The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) announced the completion of the flyover, which features two levels: a lower deck for vehicles and an upper deck for the Namma Metro.
- Final inspections are slated for June 15, after which vehicles will be permitted on the flyover.
- This structure, standing eight meters above the road and with the metro running at 16 meters high, aims to alleviate traffic congestion at one of the cityâs busiest junctions.
Decongesting Silk Board: The CSB junction will also feature two metro stations, Blue Line (CSB-KR Puram) and Yellow Line (RV Road-Bommasandra), with connecting ramps to streamline traffic flow. The Yellow Line’s trial run is set to link Bengaluruâs Electronics City to the metro network, with the entire corridor expected to be operational by December 2024 following necessary approvals and testing.
đĽ Alstom wins signalling contract
Alstom has won a âš867 crore contract from Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) to provide a fully automated train control signalling system.
Whatâs it about? Alstom has secured a contract worth 96.2 million euros (âš867 crore) to design, manufacture, supply, install, test, and commission an automated communications-based train control signalling system for Bengaluru Metro’s Phase 2 corridors. The contract, awarded by the BMRCL, includes personnel training and a five-year maintenance agreement.
- The project will enhance passenger safety by installing full-height platform screen doors at underground stations on the Reach 6 corridor and airport-line terminal, and half-height gates at an at-grade station in the 2B corridor.
- This is the first use of such doors in Bengaluru Metro, and it is expected to provide energy savings and prevent suicide attempts.
Eco-friendly: Serving three major corridors, the system will connect Silk Board on Outer Ring Road (2A) to Kempegowda International Airport (2B) via KR Puram and Reach 6 from Bannerghatta Road to Nagavara. Alstomâs driverless technology will cover an 80.39 km line, reducing travel time by 50% and lowering carbon emissions.
đŁď¸ Thubarahalli Road hazardous
Approximately 2,000 residents of Thubarahalli Extension are facing severe commuting challenges on the road, which has turned into a muddy, dangerous slush.
What’s it about? Due to the authorities’ neglect, this road becomes a slushy, impassable pond during rains, posing significant risks, especially for two-wheeler riders. Despite persistent appeals for asphalting, the road remains unpaved.
- With the ongoing construction of new residential complexes, the situation is expected to worsen.
- BBMP officials attributed the issue to incomplete stormwater drain construction, with work delayed due to traffic diversions for pipeline projects.
Citizens reassured: Upon citizen requests for intervention, Assistant Executive Engineer Malati assured the residents that the remaining construction would be completed soon.
đ§ď¸ New admin prioritises monsoon work
S Umashankar, the newly appointed BBMP administrator, has directed all officials and civic agencies to prioritise addressing monsoon-related issues to minimise public inconvenience.
What’s it about? S Umashankar, formerly the additional chief secretary of the Urban Development Department, has assumed the role of administrator for the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). He emphasised the need for all eight zonal commissioners to tackle problems such as tree uprooting, potholes, and other rain-induced inconveniences promptly.
- He directed the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) to ensure the provision of clean drinking water and swiftly address any complaints of water contamination.
- Umashankar also stressed the importance of coordinated efforts among the BBMP, BWSSB, Forest Department, and Bangalore Electricity Supply Company to effectively manage rain-related challenges.
ZCs tasked: The zonal commissioners have been tasked with leading these efforts, including desilting stormwater drains, clearing bottlenecks for water flow, and removing roadside debris.
