A

Good morning, Bengaluru!

🌧️ Today’s weather: High: 31 ℃ | Low: 21 ℃ | Partly cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers.

🧐 Did you know? A debt of ₹13 is owed by Winston Churchill to the Bangalore Club from his time here in the Army.

🤖 Early robotics classes

Schools in Bengaluru have started offering AI and robotic courses to children as young as grade 3.

What’s it about? Chaman Bhartiya School which has pioneered such a program has designed a curriculum that explores AI, robotics, and coding, providing students with hands-on experience and a platform to explore their creativity.

  • AI platforms such as Startle have also been included in designing evolving curriculums.
  • These platforms can generate a complete lesson plan even when given only a little input about the student’s needs.

Parental demands: School administrators have reported that the initiation of these programs comes from the demands parents have to educate their children in these fields as nearly 43% of Bengaluru’s parents are themselves tech workers.

🙍🏽‍♀️ First woman MP from Bengaluru

Bengaluru is set to get its first-ever woman Lok Sabha member as BJP leader and Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje won by a margin of 2,59,476 votes from Bengaluru North.

What’s it about? The 57-year-old Karandlaje had replaced MP, D V Sadananda Gowda, as a BJP candidate in Bangalore North, a BJP stronghold for a long time. Karandlaje had earlier won from Udupi-Chikmagalur seat twice, in 2014 and 2019.

  • She defeated Congress candidate M V Rajeev Gowda.
  • She had been serving as the Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare.

MCC violator:  Karandlaje had been booked for an MCC violation during campaigning when she made allegations regarding the Rameshwaram Cafe case.

🌊 Lakes in danger

Concerns have been raised about large amounts of sudden sewage inflow into the lakes due to the rains.

What’s it about? Locals residing near the city’s lakes have alleged that there is a lack of coordination between the BBMP’s Storm Water Drain department and the BWSSB which has resulted in a lack of underground drainage and discontinuity of storm water drains.

  •  Due to a lack of maintenance and cleanings the city’s SWDs are in no condition to receive the rainwater per the locals.
  • SWDs have become places for people to dispose garbage which flow into the lakes when rains come.

Wasted rejuvenation: Lake volunteers at the Subramanyapura Kere in Jayanagar have reported that due to the garbage flow in the lake, its water quality continues to deteriorate despite its rejuvenation a year back.

🧠 Tackling student mental health

NIMHANS is collaborating with the Karnataka government on a three-year ICMR project to develop sustainable programs for student mental well-being.

What’s it about? The three-year project will aim to develop a sustainable model to promote mental well-being and reduce suicide risks among students in grades 9 and 10, pre-university, and colleges.

  • 15.6% of adolescents and 21.2% of young adults experience diagnosable mental health issues.
  • However, many of them do not receive adequate support due to low awareness, stigma, and misconceptions about professional help.

Multi-disciplinary approach: The project will be taking a multi-disciplinary approach to tackle the problem involving stakeholders and experts from NIMHANS, IIT-B, and GoK.
