Harrow’s maiden voyage
H

Good morning, Bengaluru!

🌧️ Today’s weather: Thundershowers and breeze. Hold on to your hats!

🧐 Did you know? Ranga Shankara, run by the Sanket Trust, was established in 2004. It resembles Mumbai’s Prithvi Theatre. Arundhati Nag designed it in memory of her late husband, Shankar Nag, a renowned Kannada actor.

Founded in 1572, the Harrow School will begin its first academic session in its Bengaluru campus.

What’s it about? Harrow School, with a history of 451 years, is set to commence classes at its new Bengaluru campus on August 16. Located on a spacious 60-acre area in Devanahalli, near Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), the school recently hosted a private event for parents of the first cohort.

  • Distinguished individuals attending the event were Adam Hart, Harrow School Governor, and Andrew Leale, Founding Headmaster of Harrow Bengaluru.
  • Around 60% of the faculty is international, with one-third being Oxbridge graduates. Harrow Bengaluru offers diverse subjects, from theatre to robotics, promoting collaborative learning and fostering inclusivity.

Individualised attention: Established in 1572 by Queen Elizabeth I, Harrow School embraces a House system for individualised care of students. It offers both weekly or full-time boarding and a day scholar option.

  • The school follows the Cambridge Lower Secondary curriculum for Grades 6 to 8, IGCSE courses for Grades 9 and 10, and A levels for Grades 11 and 12.

🎭 Short stories adapted on stage

A play staged at Ranga Shankara last night brought to life S Surendranath’s world of ironies.

Story so far: Anthe Kanthe Puraana, a play by Rangasthe, draws inspiration from S Surendranath’s collection of short stories, Kattu Kathegalu. Directed by Shankar Ganesh, it was staged at Ranga Shankara on July 26 at 7.30 pm. Ganesh chose two interconnected and relatable narratives for the adaptation to maintain the play’s essence without making it lengthy.

  • Kattu Kathegalu is a collection of nine captivating short stories set in old Davanagere, central Karnataka, exploring cultural nuances and the region’s rich tapestry.
  • Anthe Kanthe Puraana creatively modernises the historical tales of old Davanagere, making them universally appealing on stage.

Exploring irony: According to Mr Ganesh, what sets the play apart is the unique irony found in Surendranath’s writings. It delves into the aftermath of fulfilling one’s extravagant desires in real life, resulting in a fun and chaotic storyline.

💻 Transparency in civic issues

Whitefield Citizens Ward Committee (WCWC) will launch a crowdsourcing platform to track civic violations and redressal.

Story so far: The WCWC is launching a crowdsourcing platform in east Bengaluru to report building and other violations. The data collected will be used to create an interactive map to identify violations. Recently, the WCWC’s efforts led to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) issuing orders for builders to display approved building plans.

  • The digital platform is for Whitefield residents to report violations like footpath encroachments, building plan deviations, illegal borewells, digging, and Optical Fibre Cable laying.
  • WCWC recently soft-launched its website. It plans to create an open Google form accessible on websites, Twitter, WhatsApp groups, and other social media platforms.

Transparent reporting: The WCWC plans to upload violation reports on an interactive online map with GPS locations, exposing them to public view. This initiative, supported by RWA groups like Namma Whitefield and Whitefield Rising, aims to showcase effective data management to BBMP officials and demonstrate how data can resolve issues.

  • The digital platform will track violations and the BBMP’s actions taken in response, providing much-needed transparency.

🫀 Unconventional heart valve procedure

Cardiologists at Aster RV performed a first-of-its-kind valve implantation procedure.

What’s it about? Aster RV Hospital’s Cardiac Sciences team achieved a remarkable feat by performing a rare heart valve procedure – a first for Bengaluru and the fourth in India. They successfully implanted an artificial valve in an elderly gentleman’s heart through the carotid artery, that supplies blood to the brain.

  • In the elderly, heart valve degeneration due to calcium deposits can lead to severe aortic stenosis. Transcatheter valve replacement (TAVR) is a life-saving procedure conventionally done through the leg arteries.
  • In this case, the patient had hardened and blocked leg arteries. So, the surgeons decided to undertake the procedure through the patient’s neck vessels for successful valve implantation.
