Drone pilot training
D

Good morning, Bengaluru!

🌦️ Today’s weather: More thunderstorms and more winds. Hold those umbrellas tight.

🧐 Did you know? The Malleshwaram Hogona is a street art project initiated by Bengaluru Moving. Right before the lockdown in April 2021, 13 artists gathered to make 12 murals to cover the various unique aspects of Malleshwaram.

🛩️ Drone pilot training course

Airbus will soon offer a drone pilot training programme with DGCA-approved instructors.

About the course: Starting June 26, Bengaluru will be the hub for upskilling in aviation. Airbus is launching a Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) certified drone pilot training course at its training centre in the city. Anyone who has passed 10th grade and is under 65 years can apply.

  • The five-day course will centre around micro and small-category drones. It will include both theory and flying classes. Students will receive a certificate at the end of the programme.
  • Theory-oriented lessons will include drone rules, basic principles of flight, ATC procedures, maintenance, and aerodynamics. Practical lessons will involve simulator training and flying lessons at an Airbus-approved establishment.

Why it matters? For Airbus, it’s an opportunity to demonstrate its commitment to improving India’s aviation sector. The course will go a long way in inspiring and upskilling aspiring drone pilots. By the end of it, they will have a firm grasp of the technicalities and safe operation of drones.

🥥 Inmates make sustainable utensils

Chief Justice Prasanna B Varale led the World Environment Day celebrations at Bengaluru Central Prison.

Story so far: Chief Justice Varale launched a utensils manufacturing unit in the prison. Now, prison inmates will handle the production of eco-friendly plates and cups from areca nut leaves. Currently, the unit has three operational machines.

  • The Chief Justice called it a useful measure to curb the use of plastic. He urged inmates to learn new skills in prison and apply them later in life.
  • He also planted a coconut tree on the premise.

Tell me more? The prison already has a handloom unit and a bakery. The Chief Justice appreciated the former’s efforts and tasted some baked goods made by the inmates.

🩹 No compensation for burns victims

Social pressures and police insensitivity deter women from filing FIRs and receiving compensation for abuse.

What’s it about? Hundreds of domestic violence burn victims are admitted to Bengaluru’s Victoria Hospital annually. Yet, they steer clear of the compensation offered by the government’s Victim Compensation Scheme. Between January 2020 and April 2023, the hospital treated nearly 600 burn victims. Only 33 FIRs were filed, with 28 of them filed due to victims’ deaths. The primary cause? Social pressure and fear of victim-blaming.

  • After leaving their husbands, most women find it hard to sustain themselves. It’s hard for them to land decent jobs while recovering from the burns. Amidst this, they might have kids who suffer.
  • Many women rely on their husbands’ financial resources for treatment and hospital stays. For this, victims often conceal the real cause of burns.

Other issues? It’s often the case that police fail to take domestic abuse complaints seriously, leaving survivors with ongoing health problems, unemployment, and financial hardships.

The scheme: Victims of domestic violence can avail of compensation varying from ₹2 lakh – ₹8 lakh after court proceedings. However, they can still approach the Karnataka State Legal Service Authority (KSLSA) for interim relief.

📦 Storage space demands spike

E-commerce and manufacturing sectors in Bengaluru are driving up the demand for enhanced storage facilities.

Demand and supply: Be it a brick-and-mortar store or an e-commerce company, products need someplace to go. In Bengaluru, e-commerce firms, third-party logistics players, manufacturing, and retail services are jacking up the demand for warehousing facilities.

  • So far in the city, warehouse demands have surpassed their supply. It’s led to raised market rents and a tightened market. In 2022, rents witnessed a 10% increase.
  • A recent report revealed that the suburbs need more than 250 acres of land to house adequate warehousing facilities.

Expecting investments: Players in the segment including All Cargo, Welspun, IndoSpace, Prologis, Panattoni, RMZ, The House of Hiranandani, and Morgan Stanley are rapidly expanding their presence. The involvement of prominent players is likely to lead to enhanced warehouse facilities with more automation, IoT integration, security measures, and sustainable built environments.
