Studying the sun
S

Good morning, Bengaluru!

🌦️ Today’s weather: Thunder and rainfall in some parts.

🧐 Did you know? Jayachamaraja Wadiyar acceded the Kingdom of Mysore to the Dominion of India. With his and Mirza Ismail’s support, Walchand Hirachand Doshi launched Hindustan Aircraft – later renamed Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

🔭 New metric to study the Sun

IIA scientists have proposed a new metric to assess the image quality of the Sun captured on telescopes.

Story so far: The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) has presented a new metric to quantify the image quality of ground-based solar telescopes, called the root mean square granulation contrast. It’ll help astronomers understand the Sun better.

  • With the new metric, Saraswathi Kalyani Subramanian and Sridharan Rengaswamy conducted simulations of how an image of the sun would look without atmospheric turbulence, with an atmosphere, and after adaptive optics (AO) correction.
  • The new metric will help scientists fill the vacuum left unfulfilled by the Strehl ratio or other metrics.

Tell me more? The new metric will improve the assessment of images captured with on-the-ground solar telescopes. Random temperature fluctuations in the Earth’s atmosphere cause light to bend, affecting image intensity and position on the detector.

Why the sun? Apart from the Sun being the closest route to understanding other stars, its importance for astronomers is also heightened because dynamic events like flares occur on its surface.

🚏 Ward beautification campaign

Volunteers cleaned and beautified 50 spots in the Hemmigepura Ward.

Story so far: A group of volunteers from Hemmigepura Ward in the RajaRajeshwari Nagar Assembly constituency embarked on a city beautification campaign covering 50 areas in the past year. On Saturday, the team thanked sanitation and solid waste management workers of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

  • Recently, the team cleaned and decorated a bus shelter, discarded illegal flexes, and painted a compound wall. A section of said wall was turned into a selfie booth.
  • The volunteers devised and painted slogans. To spread the message of cleanliness, they visited schools and slums.

Reactions: A BBMP engineer remarked that if each ward had such volunteers, they would be perennially clean. Volunteer Ananya Subramanya had avowed to participate in clean-up drives since she was a kid and derives much satisfaction from the project.

Bengalureans participated in huge numbers at the TCS 10k marathon this year.

Story so far: The 15th edition of the TCS 10k was organised in and around the Kanteerava Stadium on Sunday. The runners’ crowd surged with over 27,000 participants – 2,000 participating virtually.

  • Rajeev HB from the fitness community TransformU showed up with 32 companions with whom he had been holding regular run-club practice in the wee hours of the morning.
  • An employee group from Novo Nordisk counted on an early start to finish the race and successfully did it.

Marathoner with a cause: Ramamurthy Nagar’s Shiva held a placard on suicide prevention while covering the 5 km running stretch. Around 40 wheelchair users participated too.

🔍 Auditing underpasses for safety

In light of the Sunday tragedies in Bengaluru, the civic body is auditing 18 underpasses.

Story so far: Two rain-induced fatalities on Sunday have alerted the BBMP to take stock of the city’s infrastructure. Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath revealed that the Palike had initiated an audit of 18 underpasses, including railway underpasses, to prevent such catastrophic mishaps.

  • Inadequately built and faulty underpasses will be barricaded to begin repair work. In such areas, vehicular movement will be restricted.
  • Girinath said underpasses should have adequate drainage to pump out water and overhead roofs. In open-to-sky underpasses, water diversion becomes necessary.

More about KR Circle: Heavy rainfall of 50 mm within a short span caused water-logging at KR Circle. Exacerbating the situation, the storm caused leaves to cluster and clog drain gratings.
