A new spell of rains and hail in Bengaluru led to severe water-logging and accidents.
Story so far: On Sunday, heavy rains wreaked havoc in Bengaluru as streets were waterlogged and trees were uprooted. Several netizens recorded and shared visuals of the rain pouring down in torrents.
- The rain threatened to dampen the spirits of IPL fans waiting at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Gujarat Titans resumed after a short initial delay.
- Among the members of a family travelling to the city from Hyderabad, a girl succumbed to rain-induced injuries.
Why though? The renewed spell of rainfall in several areas of Bengaluru, including Vidhana Soudha, Majestic, Race Course, KR Circle, and Town Hall, is due to low pressure in the Arabian Sea. Other districts in Karnataka find themselves in a similar boat too.
đ Health risks for cabbies
A new report by NIMHANS highlights the health risks of app-based cab drivers in Bengaluru.
Story so far: A new study by the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) sheds light on the increasing risk of non-communicable diseases (NCD) like diabetes and heart ailments for app-based cab drivers.
- More than half the drivers scored high on work adversity indicators. It showed that drivers who operated during night shifts were four times more vulnerable to the risk of alcohol consumption.
- Ola and Uber drivers who work over seven hours daily were 9.3 times more likely to consume tobacco and five times more prone to maintain unhealthy diets.
Why it matters? The report sheds light on the alarming state of app-based cab driversâ health. It indicates the urgent need for regular health check-ups and medical coverage for drivers and other gig workers. Their deteriorating health affects passengers who trust the cab drivers to transport them safely.
đ§ Inside NIMHANS Brain Museum
Bengaluruâs Brain Museum is stacked with different types of human and animal brains.
Story so far: NIMHANSâ Brain Museum, located inside the neurobiology research centre of its Lakkasandra campus, is one of a kind in South Asia. In a single room, shelves are laden with donated brains from people of varying ages, having passed away due to physical trauma, infections, or other causes.
- The brains are preserved in formalin solutions in transparent cases. You will also find an open-topped container with brain and spinal cord specimens.
- There are also animal brains to look at, ranging from owls to sheep. The museum has other organs on display too. One can differentiate between a healthy liver and one affected by cirrhosis.
Why it matters? The brain museum keeps brain tissues available for neuroscience researchers from all over India. It also promotes brain donation through a QR code for those inclined to do so after their demise.
â Special measures for the swear-in
Bengaluruâs Traffic Police took special measures to contain traffic near the new governmentâs swearing-in ceremony.
Story so far: Around noon on Saturday, crowds swelled at the Sree Kanteerava Outdoor Stadium to watch Karnatakaâs new Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and other ministers take the oath. To ensure everything went smooth sailing, the Bangalore Traffic Police played their part by making extensive traffic arrangements for the movement of vehicles in the central business district (CBD) area.
- From 9:30 am to 2:30 pm, vehicular movement between Queens Circle and Siddalingaiah Circle and CTO Circle and Queens Circle was forbidden. Traffic was redirected to Lavelle Road and Cubbon Road.
- Parking, too, was monitored. While dignitaries parked at St Joseph’s College grounds, others parked at the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Head Office and other locations.
Tell me more? It was reported that many people from Siddaramaiahâs village, Siddaramanahundi, showed up at the stadium on Saturday. The swearing-in ceremony was also televised live.
