Sustainable roads
S

Good morning, Bengaluru!

☀️ Today’s weather: Sunny and hot.

🧐 Did you know? The Mystery of Bangalore is a 1918 German silent film directed by Alexander Antalffy and Paul Leni. Although it’s lost in the archives of history, the only surviving fragment shows a European man and a woman in evening dress behind a presumably Indian man in a turban.

🛣️ Pavements from plastic

A city-based social organisation is helping Radiall build sustainable road infrastructure.

Story so far: Bengaluru-based social venture PotHoleRaja is facilitating CSR projects for corporates in the city. In collaboration with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), PotHoleRaja is implementing a new model road project in the Peenya Industrial Area.

  • Radiall, a private company, is funding the initiative. It will have an efficient drainage system to inhibit flooding during monsoons.
  • The project will include utility trenches for cross-wiring that’ll help prepare for disruptions. There will be clear road markings and reflectors to guarantee the drivers’ and pedestrians’ safety.

Materials used: The current road spans around 350 metres. The workers are using recycled materials to construct the pavement and railings. Pavements usually built with steel mesh reinforcement will have a GridMats reinforcement made of recycled polypropylene. It’ll help make long-lasting footpaths from plastic waste.

🍄 Mushrooms in your living room

A new workshop sheds light on the versatile uses of mushrooms as a raw material.

Story so far: In an upcoming workshop in the city, you can learn how to make coasters, bags, lamps, and chairs out of mushrooms. Maria Joseph is a product designer holding a workshop on May 21 on utilising mushroom mycelium as a raw material to create products of everyday use.

  • It’s being held at Bangalore Creative Circus in collaboration with Nuvedo, a mushroom cultivation company.
  • While the making time is only 45 minutes, the entire process may take up to two weeks.

Why it matters? Mushrooms are quite versatile and can even be used to make leather, lamps, and packaging.

How it works: It helps to think of mushroom design as a potted plant. Mycelium, or the roots of fungi, take the shape of the mould as they grow.

🤝 Indigenising the air mobility market together

Mysuru and Bengaluru-based companies partner with ePlane to manufacture drones and UAVs.

What it’s about? Mysuru-based Vinyas Innovative Technologies and Bengaluru-based Printalytix have partnered with ePlane, an IIT-Madras incubated startup, to develop unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and flying electric vehicles. The companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ePlane on May 18.

  • The agreement entails manufacturing small and large vehicles and flying taxis using eVTOL technology.
  • Vinyas will manufacture and service the UAVs while collaborating on marketing. Printalytix will offer mechanical design and manufacturing support for their production.

Why it matters? The three companies want to indigenise the air mobility market. Their collaboration will help unlock the maximum potential of designing and engineering UAVs and drones. Vinyas’ founder Narendra Narayanan remarks that the companies’ visions fit perfectly together.

🎚️ Koramangala parties too loud

Bengaluru’s residents complain of clubs playing loud music past curfew.

Story so far: Koramangala’s residents are fed up with the loud music roaring in the neighbourhood at midnight. The issue persists despite laws regulating the blasting of music by clubs and bars at night.

  • A person residing next to a rooftop pub complained that the loud music caused vibrations in their room, disrupting their sleep.
  • Residents in the area claim to have met the pub’s manager regarding the issue but haven’t experienced any relief yet.

Police’s account: Similar troubles ail other parts of Bengaluru as well. However, police officials defend that they strictly patrol club areas to ensure no loud music is played after 10 pm.
