Good morning, Bengaluru!
🌤️ Today’s weather: Sunny temperatures and light winds.
🧐 Did you know? Bengaluru’s groundnut festival has several fascinating origin stories. Legend has it that several years ago, when farmers investigated the culprit who devoured their crops at night, they found it was Lord Shiva’s abode, Nandi or Basava. Since then, farmers have always pledged their first crop to the bull.
🚦 Citizens become traffic wardens

Amidst the city’s traffic woes, Bengalureans show interest in voluntary traffic management.
Story so far: Bengaluru’s residents show an increasing interest in traffic management by volunteering for the role of traffic wardens. College students, techies, and previous police service aspirants laud the Traffic Warden Association as an excellent opportunity for citizens to serve their community.
- For Nalloor Narayan, being a police officer was an unfulfilled childhood dream. The warden initiative provided her with the opportunity to don the police uniform and assume the duties of serving the common good that it involved.
- Govind Rajan KS, a long-term member of the organisation, calls the association a great example of public-private ownership. He derives joy from helping others. Harshitha S, an MBA student, aims to innovate traffic management.
Social barriers: Sindu Nagraj, a techie who followed her parents’ footsteps into traffic management, admits that being a woman traffic warden may not be everybody’s cup of tea. While she enjoys working hard towards people’s safety, she also has to deal with the general public’s disrespect for women officers. This involves tolerating men’s stares while one does their job.
- Harshitha, too, acknowledges the profession as male-dominated. She believes her voluntary participation in traffic management could encourage more women to become traffic officers.
🩺 Namma Clinics demand cold storage

The clinics demand cold storage facilities to ensure accessible healthcare.
Story so far: Medical officers of the recently inaugurated Namma Clinics have demanded cold storage facilities from the BBMP to ensure that vaccines are readily available. BBMP Special Commissioner, Dr KV Thrilok Chandra, responded that they are going to observe the demands for a few weeks before reaching a decision.
- Since Namma Clinics provide medical consultations and medicines for free, medical practitioners expect the footfall and demand for vaccines to increase, especially from weaker socio-economical groups.
- Shahzaib Ahmed Sadiq, a medical officer, reveals that doctors are presently addressing vaccine demands by retrieving them in storage boxes from primary health centres. This will be difficult when the number of patients increases.
Why it matters? The Namma Clinics, allegedly based on Delhi’s Mohalla clinic model, were introduced to make healthcare accessible and equitable. This involves setting up a clinic in every ward in the city to provide general consultations and screenings for diabetes, high blood pressure or anaemia and recommend the patients to better facilities if required.
📬 Anche postal system

Karnataka’s postal legacy extends back further than the British Raj GPO.
Story so far: King Chikkadevaraja Wodeyar, a contemporary of Chhatrapati Shivaji, established the Anche postal system. He purchased the city of Bengaluru from the Thanjavur Marathas for a sum of ₹3 lakh. The General Post Office (GPO) holds the legacy of Wodeyar’s local system and the British Raj’s standardisation of postal services.
- The Anche system employed a harikara or news carrier to supervise dispatching letters while overlooking matters that demanded their attention. In the 19th century, British administrators merged it with the colonial postal system.
- In 1889, when the then Imperial Post Department subsumed the Anche system, the British decided that retaining its structure and functioning would only hamper the princely state of Mysore.
The nerve centre: The GPO functions like a regular post office and serves as the administrative head of Karnataka’s postal system. The post office rests right in the thick of colonial Bengaluru. Unlike other buildings nearby, the GPO’s 20th-century roots are fairly new. The current building was erected after its colonial-era predecessor was demolished in 1985.
👰🏽 Child marriages persist

Despite being legally prohibited, child marriages persist.
Story so far: The government-run Vanivilas Women and Children’s Hospital in Bengaluru reported that teenage pregnancies composed 30% of the pregnancies it recorded. Of the more than a thousand teen pregnancies, 70% were caused due to child marriage practices, with most cases from the lower socio-economic strata.
- The hospital is legally mandated to report all cases of teen pregnancies to the police, regardless of marital status. The husbands are subsequently booked under the POCSO Act, 2012. They are also booked under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006.
- The hospital identifies underage girls from hospital forms and Aadhaar cards, and the police gather the DNA and age determination tests as evidence.
Why it matters? Last year, government data showed that despite child marriage being outlawed, the city witnessed an uptick in reported child marriage cases. The increase in teen pregnancies due to child marriage is problematic because of its ramifications on women’s health. Teenagers have a higher risk of complications like labour abnormalities, anaemia and malnutrition.
- A doctor reports that among the married teens, several are girls who eloped. Arresting the husband leaves them bereft of their only source of emotional and financial support.
