🏏 Bhuvi joins RCB
Royal Challengers Bengaluru triggered nostalgia on the second day of the Indian Premier League auction in Saudi Arabia by re-signing veteran Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar for $1.28 million.
What’s it about? The move, seen as a late but strategic decision, bolsters RCB’s bowling lineup for the upcoming season. The bidding war initially involved Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants, but Bengaluru secured the 33-year-old seamer with their first bid.
- The IPL auction witnessed record-breaking deals, with Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer securing massive contracts on the opening day in Jeddah, surpassing previous records in the league.
- On the second day, Indian pacers remained in high demand.
In-demand pacers: Mumbai Indians acquired Deepak Chahar for ₹9.25 crore, while Delhi Capitals secured Mukesh Kumar and Lucknow signed Akash Deep, both for ₹8 crore.
❄️ Early winter
Bengaluru has welcomed an early and colder-than-usual winter, with minimum temperatures in urban and rural areas hovering between 15.5°C and 16°C.
What’s it about? Typically, Bengaluru’s winter season begins in December and extends to early February. However, this year, the chill has arrived ahead of schedule. The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) predicts that winter will be harsher than previous years.
- However, the colder weather is not limited to Bengaluru.
- Northern Karnataka districts like Bidar and Vijayapura are also experiencing a sharp decline in temperatures, with lows dropping to around 12°C, an unusual occurrence for this time of year.
Little Girl responsible: Meteorologists attribute the early and intense winter to the La Niña phenomenon, characterised by cooler-than-normal surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean. Despite predominantly dry weather in the state, Bengaluru and nearby districts are expected to experience light rainfall today and tomorrow.
🥜 Kadlekai Parishe begins
Kadlekai Parishe, the annual groundnut fair has begun in Basavanagudi
What’s it about? This year, the event is being held with a sustainable approach, as organisers have committed to going plastic-free. Additionally, the government has waived the usual fees for sellers, allowing farmers to participate freely.
- Farmers from across Karnataka and neighbouring states like Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have gathered to sell their freshly harvested groundnuts.
- Although traditionally a one-day affair, the fair will continue until the farmers have sold off their stock.
Fair’s origins: Centuries ago, farmers in villages like Sunkenahalli, Mavalli, and Hosakerehalli faced recurring losses due to a bull ravaging their groundnut crops. Bengaluru’s founder, Kempegowda, responded by constructing the grand Basava (Nandi) Temple in Basavanagudi. Farmers then began offering their first harvest to the temple as a gesture of gratitude and protection and the tradition evolved into a fair.
